“The doctors told the kids that because it was such a massive heart attack, they could not make any promises whether I would survive. I remember thinking ‘I need to live for these.’”

John from Stockton suffered a heart attack when he was only 48. The shock made him quit smoking to be around to make more memories with his loved ones.

Like John, many people quit smoking for their family. It doesn’t matter how many times you’ve tried before – try again and you will get there.

Be Smile Smart by:

• Swapping the sugar – reduce the sugar in your diet by swapping sugary treats and drinks for healthier options

• Brushing twice a day – brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes with a fluoride toothpaste that strengthens tooth enamel

• Spitting not rinsing after brushing – spit out excess toothpaste after brushing instead of rinsing your mouth to get the full benefits of fluoride

•Adults should stop smoking and drink less alcohol to avoid getting stained teeth and increasing the risks of enamel erosion, gum disease, and even mouth cancer.

Poor oral health can cause tooth decay, tooth loss, bad breath and even oral cancer.

It can have a huge impact on your life, affecting everything from your ability to eat, breathe and speak to your self-confidence, employment and social life.

Dental decay rates double between the ages of 3 and 5 in the North East and North Cumbria, meaning that many childhoods are marred by dental pain and discomfort.
Adults should stop smoking and drink less alcohol to avoid getting stained teeth and increasing the risks of enamel erosion, gum disease, and even mouth cancer.

You could be cheering on the Boro as they enter the crucial final week of this season's promotion campaign!

❗We’re teaming up with Middlesbrough FC to give away two tickets to the team's home game against Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday, April 21.

Throughout April, the club will be supporting our stop smoking message at the Riverside Stadium and promoting how the South Tees Stop Smoking service can help people kick the habit for good.

And you could be there at the penultimate home game of the season as Kim Hellberg's men chase automatic promotion.

🎊To be in with a chance to winning, please follow the South Tees Public Health page https://www.facebook.com/PublicHealthSouthTees/ and tag below on this post who you would take with you.

After smoking every day for 20 years, Lynne Donnelly never thought she would quit. The turning point came when her two grandchildren arrived into the world.

The Berwick Hills resident said: “My whole life used to revolve around smoking, when my two grandchildren were born, I knew I had to make a major lifestyle change so I could continue to be around for them.

“My dad smoked his whole life and suffered from COPD and I didn’t want my health to follow in the same direction.”

At first, Lynne tried to do it alone and even used a hypnotist to help her to stop smoking. After many failed attempts, she reached out to her local stop smoking service where she attended weekly support sessions to help her finally quit for good.

Since becoming smokefree, Lynne has seen major improvements in all parts of her life.
Reflecting on the changes, she said: “I’ve seen such a big difference across the board, there are huge improvements to my health, I no longer have a bad chest or cough.

“My home and clothes also don’t smell of ci******es anymore and with the money I’ve saved, I went on a once in a lifetime Caribbean cruise.”
