It's ! Good cyber security is our shared responsibility, and all NHS staff have a role to play.

Our cyber security team works behind the scenes across University Hospitals Tees to safeguard patient data, clinical systems, and hospital operations. But true protection comes when every staff member stays vigilant and practices safe digital habits.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝘆𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗱𝗼?

✅Protects patient records and sensitive information from unauthorised access
✅Monitors hospital systems for cyber threats and suspicious activity 24/7
✅Defends against ransomware, phishing, and malware attacks
✅Ensures that clinical and administrative systems remain safe and available for patient care
✅Supports compliance with NHS and national security standards

𝗔 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆

But cyber security is not just the responsibility of our ICT teams, it is a shared responsibility and our staff are our first line of defence. By working together, we can protect our patients, safeguard our systems, and secure the NHS.

Every one of us contributes to the cyber security by:

✅Being alert to phishing emails and suspicious links
✅Using strong passwords and keeping them confidential
✅Locking devices when not in use
✅Reporting incidents or concerns immediately to the cyber security team
✅Following policies and best practices that protect patient data

Kamran Saeed is an associate specialist in trauma and orthopaedics and also works as a SAS tutor for University Hospitals Tees.

He said: "Being an SAS doctor is very rewarding as one can do full-time clinical work while getting involved in research or teaching. It is the flexibility, stability and job satisfaction which make it so attractive.

"When a patient says after recovering from surgery that I am back to work, walking as much as I want to, sleeping well and there is no pain at night - that will do for me!

"It is about improving patients' quality of life, there is nothing more satisfying and rewarding than this."

October marks domestic violence awareness month

We recently spoke to our independent domestic violence advisors (IDVA) Claire Williamson and Nicola Murphy to find out how they are supporting patient safety across University Hospitals Tees.

They work in our adult and children’s safeguarding teams to provide emotional and practical support and advice to patients and staff experiencing domestic abuse.

Their work focuses on reducing the risk of immediate harm to victims through individual safety planning by identifying the risks and needs of victims and making referrals where necessary.

🙍‍♀️Meet Claire

Claire joined South Tees on an honorary contract from Harbour last month where she worked for the last 2.5 years, supporting victims of domestic abuse and working in a multi needs refuge.

She said: “I feel privileged to have the opportunity to raise awareness of domestic abuse and empower victims to seek help. Helping someone to realise there is support out there, and giving them an opportunity to feel listened to and valued is a great role to be in.’’

🙍‍♀️Meet Nicola

Nicola has been in post at North Tees and Hartlepool for one year and has worked for Harbour for three years. Previous to her role as an IDVA, she provided support for those with complex needs.

She said: “Although it is an extremely busy and challenging role, every day is unique. Every person’s story I meet is different. I take great pride in knowing that I have been able to offer support and help to those in their time of need.

“Raising the awareness of domestic abuse and making people aware that there is support available and they do not need to suffer in silence.”

Both Nicola's and Claire's roles are funded by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Cleveland.

⚠️Safety advice

They had some key pieces of safety advice to share:

✅Always call 999 if you feel you or your children are in any immediate danger
✅Silent call – dial 999 if unable to talk dial 55 and the operator will respond.
✅If possible, have a safety plan in place – safe place in the home or safe place outside the home.

It’s that time of year again, when staff at University Hospitals Tees are encouraged be wise and immunise against flu this winter.

Our first colleagues to get the jab were Ally Cally and Rachel Fortune.

Ally was the first was the first member of staff to have her flu jab this year at James Cook Hospital. After finishing her nightshift, she stayed behind to make sure she was jabbed ahead of winter.

She said: “I get my jab every year but I wanted to get it as soon as possible as I caught flu last year, it was awful. I was really unwell for around two and a half weeks. I’d encourage other NHS colleagues to get theirs because flu is terrible.

Rachel, a clinical support worker and the first member of staff to get their flu jab at University Hospital of North Tees said: “I get my jab for the patients, the people I work with and for my family. I think it’s so important to make sure we’re protected from the flu.”

Please note, this is for staff only, not members of the public or patients.
