I'm taking a break from Independent Midwifery

I am starting a full time post at the RVI in the coming weeks on the birth centre/labour ward 🤯

So I'll not be taking on any clients for a while but the amazing is holding down the fort while I'm having a break.

If any of you aspiring IMs have been thinking about working with I cannot recommend it more. I have felt so supported and so able to be the midwife I have always dreamed of ❤️ one that can always put women first.

It's just time for me to be back in the NHS for a bit and have a break from being on call.

This is such a shame, there are now such limited options for people in the North East, there is still no homebirth service in Durham either!

When is it going to get better? We need more staff in the NHS and an acknowledgement that this service is not functioning in the best interests of physiological unmedicated birth!

First cuddle with dad

Oh to be a baby and be cuddled so gently and lovingly by your dad for the first time ❤️

✨I think birth is the most beautiful thing in the world ✨

Look at this gorgeous moment after this little girl was born peacefully in her bathtub in her home where she's spent the last hour being kissed and loved on by her parents.

In this photo, this first time mum is holding her daughter just before they get out of the bath for the first time to birth the placenta into the toilet.

I took it 62 minutes after her baby's emergence in the bath, 81 hours after her water broke and after 42 weeks of pregnancy.

Some amazing recipes from book tried and tested by the newest baby's family this week. And these nutty chocolate ones get a rave review for middle of the night breastfeeding snacks.

New babies definitely love to party and drink all night long so night time snacking is essential.

But I can definitely say that this newest family has moved out of survival mode and into thriving mode. Not completely thanks to chocolate, but I definitely think that has helped.

Getting the support you need is the biggest part of postnatal healing and the key to a good transition.

A couple top tips
1. Stay in bed for a week (yes I'm serious)
2. Get good ready meals in the freezer Or people to drop foot round pre-birth
3. Give yourself some grace with your older kids and allow the house to get a little messy and the TV to be on more than usual
4. Have a snack/drink station next to the bed that is refilled every morning.
5. Have baby as easy to access as possible so you can minimise time addressing their need to feed/change/burp as possible
6. Prepare the help ahead of the postnatal time, make a plan with your partner/friends/family how best to support you.
7. Acknowledge that you DESERVE THIS TIME. Enjoying the baby you have grown and giving yourself time to fall in love is something you are allowed to do and you being supported to do so is the best start to your journey as a parent to this new bean 🫘

This is the gorgeous breech baby who is now 8 weeks!

Her amazing mum has written up her birth story about birthing her daughter at home! 🏡

It was a special one because it was fully supported by the Head of Midwifery at York and her team. So grateful for these new relationships with trusts this last year.

🌳🌀♥️Birthing the placenta, this was about 1 hour post birth of the baby.

I love these slow third stages where everything is quiet and mum and baby are meeting properly for the first time.

Slowly transitioning to being physically separated - but remaining together.

I know I'm technically on annual leave....

💜But I had to share this photo 💜

P.s. there's a reason photos like this are rare, birth like this in a hospital does happen, but it's a miracle ✨
It deserves to be celebrated nonetheless.

If only more hospital staff could see birth like this ✨🩷

Faz tempo que esse feed não ilustra uma foto potente de parto, né?

Queria poder postar todas essas fotos, cada uma em um post pra ficarem todas no feed, porque eu não sei qual é mais linda e potente. Mas é uma sequência, então, passa pro lado pra ver.

Meus detalhes favoritos:
- mais que empoderada parindo no plantão do .pasteur, na posição que tava afim, respeitando seu corpo e sendo respeitada pela equipe;
- A conexão e entrega da enfermeira obstetra puro amô .eo (que tive a sorte de ter como minha parteira em 2019);
- A carinha do pai em todas as fotos;
- A autonomia dessa mãe;
- A presença não invasiva da doula , que apesar de não estar "fazendo massagem" ou "segurando a mão" (que muitas pessoas pensam que é a única função da doula), foi fundamental;
- A emoção de cada um ali presente, especialmente dessa família ❤️
