Today I had the privilege of leading the funeral service for Linda — someone I was lucky enough to know through work. It was a real honour to be asked, and also a reminder of how difficult it can be to hold that role when the person you are remembering is someone you’ve known personally.

I’m deeply grateful to have known Linda, and to have been able to help create space to remember her life. She was a special person, and today was both humbling and meaningful. Holding in my thoughts all who loved her and will miss her 🤍

🌿 The Firsts Are the Hardest 🌿

The first birthday…
The first anniversary…
The first holiday, celebration, or special moment after a loss — they can stir emotions we thought had settled.

Whether it’s the passing of a loved one, the end of a relationship, or a big change that’s altered life as we knew it, those “firsts” often remind us of what — or who — is missing. And that’s okay.

Grief takes many shapes. It can appear as tears, silence, laughter, or memories that bring both warmth and ache. What matters most is allowing ourselves to feel and honour what was — and still is — part of us. 💜

Such an honour and privilege to officiate at the celebration of life service for Arthur McArdle today. A member of Chapel-en-le-Frith Morris for over 50 years and a joy to see them dance in his honour. Who said funeral services had to be boring - let's celebrate life in all its guises!

A post from a FaceBook friend reminded me of the comfort we can receive when we know that those we have loved and lost are with us everyday 🤍 I think this lovely poem by Donna Ashworth sums it up nicely

FEATHERS
I left you a little white feather
I placed it right there in your way
I wrapped it in love with a message
to let you know you’ll be okay

I drew you a colourful rainbow
It followed your car for a while
I made it a beautiful rainbow
I hoped it would show me your smile

I flew down a beautiful robin
It landed right there on your ledge
I prayed he would give you the strength
to push yourself back from the edge

I try every day to remind you
that I never did go away
the feathers, the rainbows, the robins
are my way of trying to stay.

Yesterday I was at Thames View Crematorium in Kent to help a family say farewell to a remarkable man who was a sailor man and boy. In his 100th year and sailing until he was 98 years old Bill will be much missed by everyone who knew him. At the committal we sounded 8 bells to honour his seafaring life and I read this beautiful poem.
