My Top Post Partum Herbs 🌱

Motherwort - Clue is in the name 😅 it's the herb for mother's or for those in need of mothers love! I used this in tincture form towards the end of the 3rd trimester and every day since. It helps prepare the mothers body for birth in the third trimester. During the birth it helps encourage the process and after the birth it helps the mother recuperate due to it's nervine effect as well as being a galactagogue, meaning it helps encourage milk flow.

Fennel Seed - I've mostly been drinking this as a tea either on its own or as part of a blend. It has digestive qualities which not only help me but seems to help my little one with trapped wind. It is also another galactagogue. It's been effective enough that I've added it to my current tincture mix. Plus it's incredibly gentle so I don't need to worry about drinking too much of it while breastfeeding.

Ashwaganda - This Ayurvedic herb is said to give you the strength of a horse! I've found it's nutritive actions to beneficial for the first few months post partum. It's most effective when extracted in fat so I've been drinking it as a latte as an when I feel the need. It's excellent at building resilience to stress.

Marigold - is a gentle healer. I used this externally as part of a herbal bath soak for the couple of weeks post partum to help the healing process. I've also been using a calendula balm to reduce the cradle cap as it appears.

Echinacea - all round immune support! Having had a baby in the middle of winter we've been trying to avoid catching the array of respiratory infections going around. If I feel like something might be trying to take hold, or baby gets a little snuffly, I've added echinacea to my tincture until it passes. I've also added it around the time of her immunisations to give her system the best support I can.

Fenugreek - Fenugreek isn't my favourite taste, but some people love it. If you do then it also works as a tea! But I've used it as a tincture. It has a distinctive taste that is a bit like celery and maple syrup at the same time. However it is a fantastic digestive herb and a brilliant galactagogue.

Do you have a favourite postpartum herb? Let me know!
