Booking is open for the next Postnatal Planning Workshop for birth professionals!

The Postnatal Planning workshop is designed to help you help your clients prepare for the postnatal period and how to help them put together a postnatal plan. We’ll be covering what to expect physically and emotionally, recovery and self-care, nutrition and relationships among other things.

By the end of the workshop you’ll have better understanding of the 4th trimester, why information and preparation for the postnatal period is important and the difference it can make for parents experience of the postnatal period and how to support parents in preparing for the postnatal period.

It’s Sunday night and I thought it was time for part 2 of some more random trivia about me. This will be my last instalment, I promise.

💋I once made a taster tape with comedian, Shazia Mirza for a full length tv programme called ‘F**k Off, I Am A Hairy Woman’, about how women feel about their body hair and society’s pressure to remove it. It was commissioned.
💋I once hosted a Vietnamese Supper Club in my house with an amazing Vietnamese chef .co.uk Van Glue. It was a huge success and the food was delicious!
💋 I have very large feet for my mere under 5’5” height - size 8. My 12 year old daughter already has size 7 feet.
💋My party trick is being able to put on my lipstick with my cleavage
💋 I have never done a bungee jump
💋 I once made a documentary about beauty and how you are judged by society if you look different or have a facial difference.
💋 I once did admin in a factory that made female condoms - the Femidom - during my uni holidays. I might still have one somewhere…
💋I have a white poochon called Barbara Windsor (Babs for short) who loves rolling in fox poo
💋 I was once set the challenge of making some short programmes on how to make using archives fun and interesting. Luckily Sue Perkins helped me with some slapstick comedy flourishes.
💋 My burlesque journey began on my hen night when I thought I was just going to have an enjoyable evening out with my girlfriends and instead ended up dressed in an eighteenth century wig, performing a burlesque piece in front of 300 people at the Vauxhall Tavern with compère Amy LeMay

So we made it through the first week of Jan 2022! It’s grey and pouring with rain down here so I thought I would lighten the mood but sharing some trivia about myself:

💋I used to do burlesque dancing and even performed at Madame Jo Jo’s in Soho
💋I have been struck by pink lightening in India
💋I once made a documentary about a father who had 20 children
💋I used to have arachnophobia until I took my daughter to the spider house in London Zoo and now no longer fear them.
💋I speak fluent German and my mum wanted me to be a marketing manager for Lufthansa airlines (I have no clue why)
💋I wish I had studied English and History at Uni not German
💋I was a Samaritan for 5 years and used to visit young male offenders in prison
💋I love beautiful gardens but am useless at gardening
💋My happy place apart from open water swimming is foraging for fungi respectfully in the forests round here
💋I love crafting but am also fairly useless at it
💋I once sat next to David Baddiel in a public WC in Russia. The doors only came up to our necks and we could see each other’s faces reflected in the mirror in front. Let’s just say we both had ‘stage fright’!
💋I have never been a bridesmaid 😔
💋My great grandfather was a prominent engineer of miniature train engines and is a cult figure in the world of railway enthusiasts
💋As a tv researcher, I once got through to a top secret GCHQ building on the phone and they were horrified I had managed this and hung up on me.
💋I love singing and once auditioned for the London show Evita when I was 11. I didn’t get a part as they said I sounded too angelic so had to make do with singing along to Blondie with a fake microphone.
💋I love playing board games and we once encouraged my father to open a shop which would have been called The Games Cave. Sadly he didn’t.

And here is another role that I have been exploring with postnatal doulas who have started or are well underway with their postnatal doula journey.

Last night was the final session for the second group of doulas who completed our inaugural Check In Course.

Their enthusiasm and excitement at having this new offering that is so needed certainly fired me up!

They will be offering new parents check ins at 2, 6, 12, 16 and 20 weeks postpartum. Either as a package or stand alone sessions. Either alongside or separate to their in home postnatal doula services.

Because the NHS 6 week check has been rolled into the 8 week vaccinations and is well below a helpful standard, this is a much needed service and is affordable to new parents.

It has been very fulfilling to witness these doulas grow in confidence and begin their journey to becoming postnatal specialists or even consultants.

Our next Check In Course begins on 3 March and lasts for 5 weeks. The cost is £195 and is suitable for doulas and other practitioners who have knowledge of the postnatal period. Please email info@youniquepostnatal.co.uk for more information and to book.

Many people in the birth world talk about being birth keepers so I started to think about the concept of a postnatal keeper.

Someone who supports and even protects the space of the postnatal period. Because this space needs to be protected.

There is vulnerability for a new mother and parents after they have a baby. They are experiencing huge emotional, physical and physiological changes. They have bought a small and vulnerable human into the world. We need to hold them and blow a bubble of protection around them just like we do in the birth space.

The way a postnatal keeper does this is on multiple levels, emotionally, practically, physically, with information and signposting to other sources of support, for some spiritually and as an advocate so they can make informed choices.

The course costs £450 plus £150 for 3 case study debriefs with a facilitator, all payable in instalments. You will receive accreditation as an infant feeding support doula or infant feeding supporter.

I am not putting any expectations on 2022 but am making some promises to myself which I am going to try and keep.

One of them is to get in the sea more. That promise started today with a few dips in and a quick run out as it was absolutely freezing! Unfortunately as I scrambled out over the pebbles, my right b**b fell out of my swimming costume (not a very sensibly chosen one) and as the waves were crashing so loudly, I couldn’t hear everyone alerting me to my wardrobe malfunction! A suitable way for me to start 2022 when normally I am supporting others with their breasts!

Could this be a prophetic message from the universe?

Anyway, I got to share this experience with one of my oldest friends and got to eat a mince pie on the beach.

We are on the verge of a new year and what a year it has been! This December has been one of the toughest I have known with Covid sneaking through the door not just in my home but through the door of doulas and friends.

As the year comes to a close, I thought I would offer another Postnatal Awareness Event on Sun 9th Jan at 9.30-11am.

These sessions give you a chance to find out more about why we need to support the postnatal period and get a taste of what it means to be a postnatal doula/supporter.

You will come away with some interesting and useful insights even if you decide not to pursue a postnatal doula career.

If you do, the fee paid (minus Eventbrite fee) of £30 will be offset against you booking onto a YP Initial Preparation Course.

If you celebrate Christmas then I hope you have as good a one as possible with everything that’s going on!

I haven’t been on social media much lately as running a business when your house is constantly beset with illness is not a walk in the park! After Covid round 1, we are waiting to find out if Covid round 2 has snuck in the door with my daughter having illness symptoms. Luckily she tested negative on her LF, when last time round it came up positive immediately and I am testing negative so far.

On Christmas Day, will it be a kitchen disco on our own or a pub lunch with family we haven’t seen for a while? We certainly won’t be the only family making touch choices this Christmas as it seems everyone is having to wrestle with them.

But on a more positive note, I am so grateful to all the doulas and doulas to be who trained with YP this year, our wonderful community of doulas who keep me buoyed up, my co facilitators Sarah, Erin , YP’s Head of Mentoring Erin, YP’s mentors (who we will be doing a feature on next year), the doulas to be waiting in the wings and ready to start following their calling, my friends who I talk to about my ideas for YP and, of course, the parents and babies who have put their trust in me when I support them. It has been such a difficult time for all of them.

Hoping for a few brighter moments in 2022 and looking forward to the positives that next year holds.

So my host provider Moonfruit finally closed down. My website is now with Wix and the transfer over has messed up all my formatting and I have lost some text and my blog. All things I wasn’t quite prepared for! And could really do without at this particular moment!

So it’s been a strange few weeks as my daughter and I got Covid - and with the dreaded illness came lots of reflection and severely reduced energy.

You suddenly realise that the ‘intruder’ you have been trying to keep out has snuck through the back door. I feel I have learned a lot about my own fears and how this illness works. Of course, my deep fear has also been getting long Covid.

It’s also helped me reflect on what happens when the parent in a household who keeps the wheel turning becomes very unwell.

Losing smell and taste which is such an important part of our sensory life has made me value how something we take for granted can have a big impact! I have found out that for some it can take a year to return. I feel lucky mine is slowly coming back as I really do enjoy some of the food on offer in the festive season!

It’s interesting how priorities shift, much less time on social media, more time enjoying and needing offline support, a desire for the simple things, walks in nature, a hug from a friend, a walk around town, all only possible after isolation. The isolation reminds us again of the things that can be taken from us so easily.

At the moment, I am rebuilding energy levels and keeping an eye on fatigue. Emotional and physical well-being are my priority whilst still keeping all the plates spinning.

What a year it has been! I am fairly used to being pushed to my limits but this has been a whole new ballpark! Covid has changed us all and the way we lead our lives. It’s constant presence and the repercussions it creates is very wearing. Hoping we can learn to navigate our way through its non-departure.
