Hold onto your bonnets… because something egg-stra special is hopping your way! 🐣✨
We are absolutely thrilled to invite you to our Kiddies Easter Egg Hunt on Sunday 29th March and trust us, this is one event you won’t want to miss!
We’ve teamed up with the fantastic local business Sugar Rush Confectionery Midsomer Norton who have pulled a few magical strings to bring along a very important, floppy-eared VIP guest 🐰 (yes… that one!) before they hop off for their very busy Easter weekend schedule.
Here’s what we’ve got lined up for an afternoon full of giggles, goodies, and a little bit of glorious chaos:
🥚 An egg-citing Easter egg hunt (prepare for some serious sweet treat finding competition!)
🎨 Fun kiddies Easter crafts
🛍️ Beautiful seasonal crafts from local independent creators
🍰 Plenty of delicious refreshments (because hunting is hungry work!)
But the best part? Seeing our lovely residents light up as they watch the children enjoy the afternoon, it’s enough to melt even the Easter Bunny’s heart 💛
We would absolutely LOVE to see you all there.
Now all that’s left is to cross our fingers, toes, and chocolate eggs that the sun decides to make a guest appearance too! ☀️

Our first Gardening Club of 2026 was a wonderful success and thoroughly enjoyed by our residents! Everyone was excited to get started and couldn’t wait to roll up their sleeves and begin planting seeds in preparation for spring. 🌱

Today, residents planted a lovely mixture of sunflowers, poppies, cornflowers, and nigella. It was a joy to see such enthusiasm as everyone took part, looking ahead to the colourful display these flowers will bring to our garden in the coming months.

We are all looking forward to watching them grow and to enjoying their beautiful blooms together. Now we just need a little sunshine to help them along! ☀️🌼

A very Happy Mother’s Day from everyone here at Somer Valley House. 🌸

Today has been such a lovely day in our home as we celebrated the wonderful mums and mother figures who are such an important part of our community. It was heartwarming to see so many families coming together, sharing time, laughter, and special memories around the table.

Our amazing chefs truly worked their socks off to prepare a delicious Mother’s Day lunch for our residents, along with 25 guests who joined their loved ones to celebrate. The dining room was full of smiles, conversation, and that special feeling that comes when families gather together.

A huge thank you to our fantastic kitchen team who worked so hard behind the scenes to make the day run so smoothly. Your care, dedication, and teamwork help create moments like these for our residents and their families, and we are incredibly grateful to have you as part of our Somer Valley House family. You really are superstars. ⭐

We’re so pleased to share a few of the lovely photographs from today, capturing some of the smiles, happiness, and special moments that made the day so memorable.

Well… we certainly didn’t see today’s exercise class ending quite like it did! 😄

Residents were practising their hand eye coordination by throwing inflatable balls at a target… which could only be described as a giant pair of yellow bloomers!
Our brilliant Lifestyle Assistant Jeanette bravely modelled them, and from that moment on the room erupted with laughter.

There was so much giggling that some residents could barely aim their throws , mainly because the tears of laughter made it impossible to see straight! 🎯😂

We always try to keep activities fun and interesting for our residents, but today’s unexpected bit of “clowning around” definitely took things to another level. Safe to say it was an exercise class none of us will forget anytime soon! 🤍

We’ve been continuing our wonderful run of birthday celebrations, and what a joyful time it’s been! 🎉

Sending many happy returns and the warmest wishes to two truly lovely ladies who brighten our days every single day. The wonderful Ivy celebrated her birthday at the end of last week, and the equally lovely Jean marked hers yesterday! 💐

It really has felt like a marathon of birthdays lately, and we’ve loved every moment of it. Our talented chefs have been busy in the kitchen, whipping up some truly delicious masterpieces. 🎂 Each celebration cake is specially made after a chat with the resident about their favourite kind of cake, making every birthday that little bit more personal and special.

Celebrating our residents’ birthdays is something we absolutely love , it’s always a chance to share smiles, laughter, and plenty of cake!

Wow, what an incredible masterpiece of a floral display!

This stunning arrangement was so generously donated to Somer Valley House for our residents to enjoy by the lovely Karen Walker. Karen is a member of the Farmborough Floral Art Group, who held a demonstration last night showing how to create this beautiful centrepiece. The arrangement was then raffled, and Karen was the lucky winner, yet in an incredibly kind and thoughtful gesture, she chose to donate it to Somer Valley House for our residents to admire.

And admire it they certainly did! The display is a wonderful burst of colour, featuring a fabulous explosion of carnations, roses, gerberas, lilies, lush foliage and charming spring decorations. It has truly brightened our home and brought so much joy to everyone who has seen it.

Karen, thank you so much for your generosity, kindness and thoughtfulness. This beautiful arrangement has lifted all our spirits and is a lovely reminder that spring is just around the corner 🌺 🌷 💐

🌸 Happy International Women’s Day! 🌸

Today we’re celebrating the incredible women who make our team what it is , strong, compassionate, resilient and endlessly inspiring. We are so lucky to work alongside such amazing women every day, and we’re grateful for the care, dedication and warmth they bring to our residents and their families.

But today we’d also like to give a very special shout out to one woman who quite literally keeps the ship sailing, our wonderful General Manager, Rhona Sievewright.

Rhona’s commitment to our residents and their families is nothing short of exceptional. Much of what she does happens quietly behind the scenes , long after most people have closed their laptops and called it a day. If there’s a way to make life better for our residents, you can guarantee Rhona is already working on it ! Truth be told, caring for others seems to be written into Rhona’s DNA. As the only girl in a family of many brothers, she naturally stepped into the role of organiser, peacekeeper and chief “looking-after-everyone.” Later, as a military wife, she travelled the world supporting other military families while raising her own , a role that requires equal parts compassion, resilience and the ability to organise chaos with military precision!

Her professional journey into the care sector began working with young children, then with young people with complex learning difficulties. From there she expanded her knowledge and qualifications into senior and dementia care and it’s fair to say that if Rhona doesn’t know the answer to a dementia care question, it probably isn’t worth knowing!

One of the things we admire most about Rhona is that she never asks anyone to do something she wouldn’t do herself. She leads from the front , whether that’s supporting with complex personal care, making someone a cup of tea, or simply sitting and holding a resident’s hand when they need comfort the most.

And just when you think you’ve got Rhona figured out, she surprises you because outside of work she can do the splits, fire-eat, and dance burlesque style , all in the name of maintaining a healthy work-life balance! Not to mention her impressive shoe collection, which could easily rival anything in Imelda Marcos’ wardrobe and is arguably more art gallery than footwear storage.

Rhona, thank you for everything you do , for your leadership, your compassion, your energy and your sense of humour. We are incredibly lucky to have you at the helm.

Happy International Women’s Day, Rhona , long may you continue to steer the ship at Somer Valley House!

It’s been a wonderfully busy week of celebrations here at Somer Valley House! 🎉

We were absolutely delighted to wish a very special Happy Birthday to Alexander , a much loved member of our community who holds a truly unique place in our hearts. Alexander was our very first resident when Somer Valley House opened its doors, making this celebration all the more meaningful for everyone.

To mark the occasion, Rhona proudly presented Alexander with his cake of choice , a deliciously rich chocolate cake, beautifully topped with fresh strawberries and crisp wafers. 🍓🍫 It certainly looked as good as it tasted!

There was plenty of smiling, laughter and birthday cheer as we all came together to celebrate. Moments like these remind us how special our Somer Valley House family truly is.

Here’s to you, Alexander ! Many happy returns! 🥳✨

Some of our residents enjoyed a truly delightful outing this week to Radstock Museum, where they immersed themselves in the rich and fascinating history right on our doorstep. The visit was filled with wonderful moments of reflection, as the many memory evoking artefacts sparked heartfelt conversations about stories passed down from parents and grandparents.

There was so much to see and explore, with a variety of engaging and interactive exhibits that our residents thoroughly enjoyed taking part in. It was a joy to see everyone so animated, sharing memories and discovering new insights together.

Of course, no trip would be complete without a visit to the on site café. Over a lovely cuppa and a delicious slice of cake, residents relaxed and chatted happily about all they had seen, rounding off a meaningful and thoroughly enjoyable afternoon out.

This week we had the absolute pleasure of welcoming Emma, a local Admiral Nurse, to Somer Valley House. It was wonderful to spend time together and recognise the incredible work she and her colleagues do within our community.
As a small token of our appreciation, Cath, our Home Administrator, and Bruce, our Maintenance Manager, presented Emma with a few goodies to take back and share with her team. It’s a simple gesture, but one that comes with heartfelt thanks and genuine gratitude.
Admiral Nurses are specialist dementia nurses here in the UK, providing free, expert and highly personalised support to families and carers navigating their dementia journey. Their compassionate guidance, emotional support and professional expertise make a profound difference to so many lives.
We are truly thankful for the invaluable service Admiral Nurses provide to our local community. It is a privilege to connect and collaborate with such dedicated professionals, and we look forward to welcoming Emma back to Somer Valley House again soon.
