Today we’re celebrating Wellderly Day 💙

Looking after your eye health is an important part of staying independent, active and confident as the years go by. Our eyes change naturally with age, and regular eye exams can help detect common conditions such as:

👓 Changes in prescription.
👁️ Cataracts.
👁️ Glaucoma.
👁️ Age-related macular degeneration.

Many eye conditions develop gradually and without obvious symptoms at first, which is why routine visits to your local independent Optician are so important 💚

😴✨ World Sleep Day ✨😴

Sleep does more than help you feel rested, it plays an important role in your eye health too.

While you sleep, your eyes are hard at work:
👁️ Replenishing oxygen to the surface of the eye.
👁️ Restoring the tear film that keeps eyes comfortable.
👁️ Repairing daily strain from screens, reading and driving.

Not getting enough sleep can lead to:
🔹 Dry, irritated eyes.
🔹 Eye twitching.
🔹 Blurred vision.
🔹 Increased sensitivity to light.
🔹 Difficulty focusing.

If your eyes often feel tired, gritty or strained, it could be worth looking at your sleep routine, as well as booking a routine eye exam to keep everything on track 💙

👁️ World Glaucoma Week 👁️

It's World Glaucoma Week, a global initiative encouraging everyone to learn more about glaucoma and the importance of regular eye exams. Glaucoma is often called the “silent thief of sight” because it usually has no obvious symptoms in the early stages; many people don’t realise they have it until vision has been lost.

📊 Did you know?
🔹 In the UK, an estimated 1.1 million adults currently have glaucoma and many more may be undiagnosed.
🔹 The number of people with glaucoma is expected to increase significantly as the population ages, which makes regular eye exams even more important.

Why does this matter? Because once vision is lost from glaucoma it can’t be restored. However, early detection through routine eye exams can slow or prevent further sight loss 💛

💜✨ It's International Women’s Day ✨💜

Did you know some eye conditions are more common in women?

👁️ Dry eye – hormonal changes (including pregnancy and menopause) can increase the risk of dry, irritated eyes.
👁️ Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) – women are statistically more likely to develop AMD, partly because we tend to live longer.
👁️ Autoimmune-related eye conditions – conditions such as thyroid eye disease are more common in women.

Simple steps like regular eye exams, a balanced diet, UV protection and speaking up about any changes in your vision can all make a difference. If you’ve noticed discomfort, blurred vision, or changes that don’t feel quite right, don’t ignore them, your local independent optician is there to help 💜👓

🌿✨ Happy Plant Power Day! ✨🌿

Did you know that what’s on your plate can help support your eye health? Many plant-based foods are packed with nutrients that contribute to healthy vision:

🥬 Spinach & kale – rich in lutein and zeaxanthin, which help protect the eyes from harmful light.
🥕 Carrots & sweet potatoes – high in beta-carotene (a source of vitamin A), important for good vision.
🫐 Blueberries – full of antioxidants that support overall eye health.
🌽 Sweetcorn & peas – another great source of eye-friendly carotenoids.
🥜 Nuts & seeds – contain vitamin E, which helps protect eye cells.

Adding colourful, plant-based foods to your meals is a simple way to support not just your eyes, but your overall wellbeing too 💚👁️

🔬✨ It’s British Science Week ✨🔬

This week celebrates the brilliant discoveries and innovations that have shaped our world, including some that have transformed eye care.

Did you know that one of the most important tools used in eye exams, the ophthalmoscope, was invented by British scientist Charles Babbage in 1847? His early design paved the way for the instruments that allow optometrists to look inside the eye and detect signs of eye disease.

From diagnostic technology to lens design, science continues to improve how we understand, protect and enhance our vision 👁️✨
