Chloe, Danny, Hannah & Jarrrod returned yesterday to have another round before departing for home. Jarrod is/was another of our 'elite' group players from the past but has been away for quite a while now, busy marrying, becoming a teacher and raising a family, making mum Julie & dad Malcolm very proud in the process. He and wife Hannah were also successful winners on one of our many popular game shows on television. Saturday he shot 59 and was moderately pleased but before going out Sunday in a very strong wind, he sounded pessimistic about beating that. Having previously been on baby minding duties Hannah decided to join in the fun and the four of them kicked off across a strong westerly wind. Jarrod kicks a great tee shot and side foots the ball in for a birdie! Chloe takes 3 for her par! Game on. [Golf established itself as a popular sport because of the invention of a handicap system which allows all players to compete equally according to their ability and gender and Footgolf has followed suit.] The day before Jarrod shot 59 and Chloe 74 on which evidence Chloe was receiving 15 shots from Jarrod and hole 1 being difficulty factor[si] 4 Chloe receives a shot advantage on this hole so it was a tie, game on! Hannah struggled with holes 1 and 2 but seemed to be enjoying herself anyway and was happy to be joining in. Hole 2, difficulty factor 3, went to Chloe with another par 3 and at that point, with Jarrod only managing a 4 she also took the lead!!! Danny meanwhile was a little off the pace to begin with but by hole 7 [birdie 2]he had steadied himself and was finding some good form. Chloe and Jarrod also managed birdies on 7 and as the trio hit the turn on hole 10 it was a tight match. Jarrod had beaten Danny by just the one shot the previous day and despite Jarrod's birdie on the 9th, was now hot on his heels. It was as they say 'ding d**g all the way' from there on in, as Hannah looked on [you can imagine] wondering how this would end and why were the three taking this so seriously. Danny birdied 13, Chloe birdied 14 and Jarrod birdied 15! Chloe finished the last three holes 4,4 and 3, Jarrod went 3,3 and 4 while Danny won the 'Last 3 Competition' by completing his last three in 3,3,3! Do final scores really matter among friends? You bet they do! Except for Hannah of course, who is probably thinking about getting Maisie and Harrison home and fed. Final scores were: Jarrod 55 [so much for pessimism mate.]. Danny 60, Chloe 64. On handicap therefore the winner was Chloe by 6 shots, a resounding victory having improved by 10 on the previous day. With his victory on Last 3 Competition' in his pocket, Danny came third overall, despite having improved by 1 from his previous days score and Jarrod placed second having played better by 4. Congratulations to Chloe. Leading lady on the season so far and current champion of the Accrington Pals.

With friends all around the world and a smart phone to stay connected I love telling them why I settled here in Millom. It comes as no surprise to me that off-comers like me (23 years and never going away) are moving in wholesale but as I began to be accepted I realised by listening that this is a town with a strong sense of community, the elders of which were very affected by the closure of the mine and the Ironworks in 1968. Perhaps many walked around after that with their heads down or somehow forgot the natural beauty of their surroundings. It's easy to take surroundings for granted when they are there everyday too. i look forward to hearing from them and others of a latter generation via this event.

After all that dreadful weather and us not being able to get machinery on to mow the course the rain finally abated for long enough to dry the ground out naturally and sufficiently for play to get underway again. And it was fitting that the first ones out on the course were Ethan Riley and dad Rob, who both belong among our elite players and were ideal players to report back on their experiences on the course. And what a match they had too, a real ding d**g battle where the score was extremely close from start to finish. Ethan would go one up, Rob equalised, then went one up himself before Ethan replied in kind. At the turn it was all square 28 - 28, Rob's birdie on the 6th being cancelled out immediately by Ethan's on the 7th! Holes 10, 11 & 12 all went to Ethan with three consecutive birdies against dad's three pars and with Ethan going three up with 6 to play it began to look decisive but 13 was shared in pars before Rob hit back on the next with an excellent birdie on the downhill 14th, reducing the lead to 2. Up hill 15 was drawn in pars, 16 the same and so Ethan stood on the 17th laying dormy as the golfers would put it, 2 up with 2 to play - and he can't be beat. But that's always a more precarious position than it looks and so it proved this time with Rob continuing his amazing run of pars but Ethan unable to close it out by taking 4's on 17 & 18. A remarkable game under the circs and at the end honours shared between them 56 - 56. Ethan remains a footballer waiting to launch when he reaches open age and with Rob alongside to coach who knows how far Ethan could go? Millom's star of the future? Could easily be! They report the course to be perfectly playable although still damp down the bottom, so it's great to see it back in use. Needs a little TLC but that's soon done and we look forward to seeing all our regulars back. See you there.

It was great to see The Windy Boys back on the course but if the weather continues it's recent trend of being kind to them we may need to think about changing their name! These guys visit us every year and are always among our elite players with scores which reflect exactly that even when, as in the past, they have had to do battle with the most extreme of conditions. So it must have come as a pleasant surprise to find themselves playing in the sunshine and their regular walk to the top of Blackcombe a particularly memorable occasion. Back on the footgolf course the guys were just as competitive as usual with the scores telling their own story. Andy had the proud boast of being the only player on the day to birdie the downhill 4th during his score of 57 while Rupert's 57 showed the biggest improvement of the day on the back nine; 33 on the front and just 24 on the back. Pinch began with a birdie on the 1st and went on to post the only hole-in-one of the day by sliding the ball along the flat and into the 7th hole during his 55. Sanford started out the same way and went on to record fifteen pars, one bogey and two birdies which gave him an amazing score of one under par 53 for the course. Well played mate! But even that was not quite good enough to beat Jock to the title this time around as he counted five birdies and just two bogeys in his fab round of only 51. Such celebrations have not been seen since the Scots beat World Champions England at Wembley in 1967. Great to see you guys getting a break with the weather for a change, superb scores considering the underfoot conditions and congratulations to all on a tight competition.

It continues to be a very difficult August weather wise but there have been some brave souls who've got out on the course despite that and here's a few of the results of their endeavors. Dec & Evan Pugh exercised some sibling rivalry and it was Dec who came out on top this time with a fine score of just 53. Kee P was out on the same day and posted a solid 58. Last week was the turn of the four amigos Matt, Howard, Rupert & Ollie. Rupert & Matt tied in 3rd with 58's, Howard was 2nd with 56 and Ollie took the honours with an outstanding score of 50. Thanks to all for coming and we hope you had fun and that we'll see you back when glorious weather is upon us.

It was great having course record holder Greg Waters back. When he's not opening the batting or catching fish Greg can still call into play the football skills that made him such a local legend and they were on display again here. He brought the multi-talented sportsman that is son Freddy (10) and his pal Pat (54) with his sons Lewis(15) and Max(14). It was a bit of a birdie-fest with Freddy's highlight a birdie on the 7th in his 62 while Max had three in his 59. Lewis also had three in his 63 and but for a bit of a problem on the 17th would have gone even lower. Pat had a round of two halves, improving his front nine 31 by five shots to finish with a 57. Truth be told it was another masterclass by Greg as he recorded seven birdies in an excellent score of just 47. Thanks for coming guys.

Andy Marsden is one determined young man with his sight set firmly on joining the elite Silecroft footgolfers and to that end he came straight back out yesterday and bounced back from Fridays difficult round. Starting out with a par on the long first helped before birdies on 3 and 4 boosted his spirits even more. A par on the straight 7th was followed by a 4 on the difficult uphill 8th before another par on the long cross field 9th meant a front nine total of just 28. A par on the short 10th and a birdie on 11 gave a positive start to his back nine which was completed in 29 for a total of 57. With nothing more than a 4 on any hole he remains on track to break 55 and join the elite which for one so young is some achievement. With the course bound to dry out further and add distance to his shots it's surely just a matter of time.

Young Andy Marsden has been back out looking to improve on his best score and when things did not go to plan he was able to take on board some sage advice. More of that later. 4,4,4 was not the greatest start but then pars on the downhill 4th and another on the uphill 5th improved the scorecard somewhat and his spirits. Things went off piste again on the 6th but yet again he was able to dig in and produce pars on 7 & 8 before closing out his front 9 with another 4 for a half way total of 32. Six pars on the back nine helped him lower that nine score to 31 giving him a total on the day of 63. Last time out Andy shot an excellent 56 so we know the talent is there but this latest round showed us something else; that he is capable of bouncing back when things do not go well from the outset and this was the proof. "Got to recognise your bad days!" was written on his card, presumably by a keen observer and yes there's a lesson all players have to learn sooner or later, namely we all have bad days and as it also said on his card we all have to see where we went wrong, learn and move on. So today wasn't his best, but the talent is there and he'll soon be showing us just how good he is.

Jack Sowerby and Victoria Wright [?] were out on Wednesday and enjoyed their game on the new mown course. Victoria began with a par on the 1st which put her briefly in the lead before adding a birdie on the 9th but a string of pars and two birdies on the front 9 meant Jack had soon claimed it for his own. Victoria started the back nine with another excellent par and added an even better one on the 13 before coming home in just 74 shots. Jack's good run continued as he put together five pars on the back 9 to bring him home in 35 for a total of 64. Scouts report that a lot of fun was had.

Rob Riley and son Ethan have been playing footgolf at Silecroft ever since we opened and have been in the elite group almost from the start. And as Ethan has got older so the matches have become closer contests and their game on Sunday proved the tightest yet. Ethan started well and took the lead with an excellent birdie on the 1st but the long 2nd proved difficult for both with Rob eventually taking that with a 5 to Ethan's 6. The 3rd and 4th were tied before a run of pars for Rob provided wins for him on 5, 6 & 8 which all added up to a lead for him at the turn by 30 to 33. Ethan hit back immediately with his second birdie of the day on the short 10th and reduced Rob's lead to just 1 with a winning par on the 12th. The 13th was tied with both scoring outstanding birdies before Rob extended his lead to two again with a winning par on 14. Another birdie for Ethan on the 15th reduced the lead yet again and so it was down to the wire. Rob finally took a two shot lead to the 18th but Ethan was determined to finish well and did so with his fifth birdie of the day and ended just one shot down on dad with a final score of Rob 57 Ethan 58. Great footgolf guys.
