Blustery Borrowdale.
A recent walk with the Cumberland Council Care Experienced Team!
We headed up to Styhead and Sprinkling Tarn with a few also making it to the top of Allen Crags before the wind became too strong to continue.
It was great to show these young people the true power of nature, and build some resilience in the process.
A sprained ankle, a couple of blisters and strong winds didn’t stop the smiles on their faces and it’s great to see them keep coming back to our Tracks&Dales Wellbeing Walks!
Thanks again to tnlcommunityfund for making this possible for those that need it most.

First steps.
It was great to take these lovely ladies out recently around Trowbarrow quarry! Maureen, Norma and Susan all got in touch with Tracks&Dales through the NHS’ Primary Care Network for Carnforth & Milnthorpe. Being outdoors has been an amazing outlet for them to open up and improve their mental health.
Looking forward to our next walk!

Meet Mike. Mike came to Tracks&Dales through the NHS’ Primary Care Network for Carnforth & Milnthorpe.
Mike is, in his words, on a ‘healing journey’ and nature is what has helped enable him to improve his mental health and well-being.
Mike is wanting to deconstruct and rebalance his chronic trauma from childhood right through to adulthood.
Through our programme, Mike is already showing signs of healing through acceptance and change.
Mike has been to Hutton Roof, Gait Barrows, Hawes Water and Trowbarrow, enjoying these areas for their unique flora and fauna.
Thank you to the for making this possible.

Pushing confidence and smashing down barriers.
Tracks&Dales went with the Cumberland Care Experience team out in The Lakes again, this time to Borrowdale and to the summit of Castle Crag.
A month ago, a lot of this group wouldn’t have even considered walking up any hills, never mind a Wainwright!
Lots of confidence gained and we all can’t wait for the next one.

Meet Callum. Callum had recently started attending Andy’s Man Club support groups in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria. Callum started attending due to loneliness and depression and knew he needed to change.

Tracks&Dales offers outdoor activities to all Andy’s Man Club participants, so Callum took the big first step and got in touch with us, as he has always wanted to discover the Great Outdoors, as he knew it would benefit his mental health, but never knew how.

After an initial chat, it was evident that Callum would benefit from time spent outside on walks and climbs throughout Cumbria. Callum explained he is lonely, and would like to socialise more through nature. Tracks&Dales explained how our structured sessions will enable him to become independent and safe in the outdoors, as well as help him meet likeminded people to share his stories and adventures with.

Our first walk, albeit very wet, was fantastic. We met at High Dam near Newby Bridge and walked for 3 hours around the area, talking about how the outdoors can help heal as well as about the local flora and fauna.

Looking forward to the next walk, Callum!

Another successful walk last week with Cumberland Council and their Care Experience Group.
The Young People who participate on these walks have grown up in care, and at Tracks&Dales, we are ensuring these people don’t get forgotten and don’t ’fall through the system’.
We are helping them with their mental health by showcasing how good the Great Outdoors can be for their mental health.
The walk last week was to the summit of Latrigt and then extended the walk to below the mountain, with lots of positive conversations about what each individual wants to get out of these activities with us.

Meet David. After a bout of covid a few years ago, David’s short term memory became non-existent. Even remembering things he had done minutes before became almost impossible.

David has completed the ‘Wainwrights’ round three times, but is now unable to go into the outdoors independently. Tracks&Dales are now here to help. Starting with short walks around south Cumbria, David’s aim is to do some of his favourite Wainwrights again, and hopefully, regain some short term memory through talking, reminiscing and opening up.

Getting outside again wouldn’t have been possible without the support of Tracks&Dales and the Carnforth and Milnthorpe Primary Care Network.

A fantastic walk around Buttermere with the Cumberland Care Experienced team!

Tracks&Dales met up with Young People from Carlisle, Whitehaven and Workington in Buttermere, to show them the beauty of their home county and how important moving in nature can be for your mental health.

Positive conversations were flowing, the views were excellent and we will all be meeting up again soon to be pushed further, helping them instil confidence and gain independence, all through the power of the great outdoors.

Meet Tom. After walking away from a high-stress job in a Michelin-starred kitchen, Tom struggled to face each day. Even a short walk felt impossible.

With gentle support from Tracks&Dales, Tom started small—with a climb at Hutton Roof. That one step turned into many: indoor climbing, The Langdales… and now, he’s planning his summit of Helvellyn.

Even better, Tom’s back at work in a local pub he loves. He’s rediscovered confidence, purpose, and connection—all through movement in nature.

5 ways to improve your Mental Health outdoors:

- Mindfulness Walks: find things you can see, hear, taste, smell or touch. For example, grass under your feet or the feeling of wind and sunlight.
- Get creative. Draw or paint animals or nature scenes, or let them inspire a poem or song lyrics. If you enjoy writing in a journal, try doing this outside.
- Eat meals outdoors. If you work indoors, try and have lunch outside. Have a picnic in a local park, or sit in a garden if you have one. This might be something you could enjoy doing with other people.
- Go on a litter picking walk. For example, in the park or on the beach. This gives a real sense of achievement.
- Try birdwatching. You don't need any special equipment. See the RSPB website for more information on feeding, sheltering and watching birds.

Once you’ve had a go at the 5 options above, you may find more ways to improve your mental health by being outdoors. It really does help!
