Sexual Abuse & Sexual Violence Awareness Week – 2 – 8 February 2026

This week (2 – 8 February 2026) is Sexual Abuse and Sexual Violence Awareness Week, a national campaign dedicated to raising awareness of sexual abuse and sexual violence, supporting survivors, and encouraging open, informed conversations about these serious issues. This year, organisations and communities across the UK are joining together to challenge stigma, share vital resources, and promote understanding and prevention.

Why this week matters

Sexual abuse and sexual violence can affect anyone regardless of age, gender, background or circumstance. This awareness week provides an important opportunity to:

- Educate our community about consent, respect, and healthy relationships.
- Raise awareness of the impact of sexual abuse and violence on individuals and families.
- Signpost support and resources available locally and nationally for those affected.
- Break the silence and reduce stigma by encouraging respectful, supportive dialogue.

Support available locally

The Sexual Assault and Abuse Support Service (SAASS) for Buckinghamshire & Milton Keynes offers free, confidential support to anyone aged 16+ who has experienced sexual assault, abuse, or violence at any point in their lives. Support includes:

- Counselling and therapeutic services, with up to 24 sessions available.
- Peer support groups for shared experience and connection.
- Information, advice & guidance appointments, tailored to individual needs.
- Independent Sexual Violence Advisor (ISVA) support for those reporting to, or considering reporting to, the police.

24/7 national support line run by R**e Crisis England & Wales for anyone who needs immediate, confidential help.

For support or referrals:

- SAASSBMK – call 01296 392468 (Buckinghamshire) or 01908 201971 (Milton Keynes) or email support@saassbmk.org.uk.
- 24/7 R**e & Sexual Abuse Support Line – 0808 500 2222 – confidential phone and online chat service available across England & Wales.

How you can take part

We encourage everyone to:

- Learn and share reliable information about consent and support services.
- Listen and support survivors in your community with empathy and respect.
- Promote resources like SAASSBMK and national support services on social media or within your networks.
- Engage in conversations that help break down stigma and promote safety for all.

Sexual abuse and violence are complex issues, and support must be ongoing — not limited to just one week. This awareness week is a reminder of our collective responsibility to foster safe, respectful communities.

Do you know about Private Fostering?

Private fostering is when a child under 16 (or under 18 if disabled) lives with someone who is not a parent or close relative for 28 days or more. This can include situations such as children staying with a friend’s family, relatives who aren’t classed as close family, or host families while parents work or study overseas.

By law, Milton Keynes City Council must be informed of all private fostering arrangements so that children’s needs and safety can be properly supported. Parents, carers and professionals all have a role in making this happen.

💡 If you know of a private fostering situation, please let the Council know:
📞 MASH Team: 01908 253169 or 01908 253170
📞 Out of hours: 01908 265545
📧 Email: children@milton-keynes.gov.uk

Let’s help keep children safe and well supported in our community.

💚 Cervical Cancer Prevention Week | 19–25 January 2026 💚

This week is Cervical Cancer Prevention Week, led by The Eve Appeal, shining a light on how we can reduce the risk of cervical cancer through screening, vaccination and awareness.

📌 Did you know?
Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers. Regular cervical screening (smear tests) can detect changes early — often before cancer develops.

✔️ Attend cervical screening when invited
✔️ Don’t ignore symptoms like unusual bleeding or pain
✔️ Take up the HPV vaccination if eligible
✔️ Talk openly and encourage friends, family and colleagues to attend screening

You can find trusted information and support from:
👉 The Eve Appeal: https://eveappeal.org.uk/campaigns/cervical-cancer-prevention-week/

👉 NHS cervical screening information: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/cervical-screening/

💬 If you’ve been putting off your appointment, let this week be your reminder — screening saves lives.

Find out about the NHS cervical screening programme, including when it's offered, how to book, what happens at your appointment, getting your results and how it can help protect you from cervical cancer.
