Public Service Announcement:
I don’t know who needs to hear this… but check your breasts. Seriously — check them.
Today, I finally got some good news. After months of mammograms, ultrasounds, MRIs, and waiting for answers, a doctor was finally able to confirm that the small lump I’d found was nothing to worry about.
A few months ago, I found a small lump on my right b**b and went straight to my GP. I was quickly referred to the breast clinic in Milton Keynes, where they actually found another lump — one in a really awkward position that couldn’t easily be biopsied.
I was referred for an MRI a few weeks later, but because I’m allergic to the contrast dye, they couldn’t get enough information. So, I was referred back to the breast care unit for another attempt at a biopsy under ultrasound guidance.
It should have happened within two weeks, but as many people know, our NHS teams are stretched beyond belief. So the wait was longer.
Fortunately, today, the doctor who saw me was confident enough to go ahead and try the difficult biopsy — and thank goodness she did. If she hadn’t managed to do it, I would’ve had to go through surgery to have the lump removed just to be safe.
She discovered that it was something that could be aspirated, and it turned out to be completely harmless. No surgery, no further tests — and I’ve now been discharged.
I can’t describe the relief.
And yes — I even took a picture in my beautiful little hospital gown today (not quite how most people are used to seeing me!). But I wanted to share it because this is real life. Health doesn’t care how busy we are, how we look, or how many things we’ve got going on. In fact, when your health is at risk only have ONE problem!
Please, please check your b**bs regularly. Know what’s normal for you so you can spot when something changes.
I was lucky this time. Don’t wait if you find anything unusual — even if it turns out to be nothing, it’s always worth getting checked.
If this post makes even one person stop and check today, then sharing my story (and my super glamorous hospital look!) was absolutely worth it.
