Our Funeral Director, Amanda-Louise, led the way to say farewell to a much loved lady.
Did you know why we as funeral directors walk in front of a hearse:-
1. Sign of respect and leadership of the procession
Walking in front of the hearse is a symbolic way of “leading” the funeral procession. It signals that the deceased is being escorted with dignity and care, and the funeral director is guiding them on their final journey.
2. Traffic and safety control
In some cases, especially when the procession involves multiple vehicles or crossing roads, we walk ahead to help manage traffic, ensure right-of-way, and keep the procession together and safe.
3. Tradition and ceremony
In older traditions, processions on foot were more common, with the coffin carried and followed by mourners. The modern hearse replaced much of that, but some ceremonial elements remain—walking ahead or alongside the hearse keeps a sense of ritual continuity.
4. Coordination of the procession
The funeral director is essentially “in charge” of timing and movement. With us walking near or ahead of the hearse helps us to coordinate stops, arrivals, and spacing between vehicles.
Not all funerals include this today—many funeral directors stay in vehicles—but we like to upkeep this honour to ensure respect, safety, and maintaining a dignified, orderly procession.
