The flag of St George – a red cross on a white background – is the symbol of England and is part of the United Kingdom’s Union Flag.

It was adopted by English Kings as their banner from at least as early as Edward I who reigned from 1272-1307. However it is also widely associated with Richard I (or Richard the Lionheart) who is said to have adopted it from the Italian city of Genoa in the late 12th Century.
We’ve had great fun replicating it today.

Fish and Chip Friday originated from a combination of Catholic tradition—abstaining from meat on Fridays—and the rise of industrial, affordable working-class meals in the 19th century.

Whatever its origins they were throughly enjoyed by us all today.

The change in the weather didn’t stop this hardy bunch from planting out the sunflower competition seedlings this afternoon. Can’t believe that time of year has come around again so quickly.

The tradition of eating pancakes specifically came from a need to use up rich, indulgent foods before the Lenten fast. During Lent, items like eggs, milk, and fat (butter/lard) were traditionally forbidden.
Pancakes were the perfect solution because:
• They used up all the "temptation" items in one go.
• The ingredients (flour, eggs, milk) were staples that needed to be cleared before they spoiled.
• They provided a high-calorie "last hurrah" before the lean weeks ahead.

We just made them because we like eating them….with our favourite topping.

Christmas cake actually started life as plum porridge, designed to line people’s stomachs after a day of religious fasting. Soon, other fruits and a dash of honey joined the plums and became the good old Christmas pudding.

Around the 16th century, people began to use richer ingredients so the oats were removed and flour and eggs were added. The pudding started to resemble the kind of fruitcake we’d recognise today. Spices that had started to be brought over from the east were incorporated into the cake to symbolise the three wise men.

After weeks of preparation and priming we finally got to decorate our cake today.
