Have you ever noticed how your news feed shows you sponsored ads based on your search history or what you’ve clicked on before? I often use this with my clients as an analogy to describe how our minds work.
It’s estimated that we have around 60,000 to 70,000 thoughts each day. Since it’s impossible to generate that many completely new thoughts, our mind tends to recycle ones it believes are useful to you. Usually based on what you’ve focused on in the past or what has seemed helpful to you before.
This can be beneficial, like when your subconscious reminds you to look both ways crossing the road. But it can also hold you back like when it tells you not to speak up in a meeting for fear of saying something silly and everyone thinking you’re stupid.
The good news is, just like with online ads, the less attention you give to unhelpful thoughts, the less frequently they’ll show up. Equally, when you start focusing on the positive aspects of your life, it’s like entering something new into Google (or whatever search engine you use) and before long, you’ll start noticing more of those helpful and uplifting thoughts showing up too.
With love,
Jayne ❤
