You are not defined by who you were or what you have gone through.

Do those experiences make up our biography and how we view & interpret the world? Yes! Do they inform us of who we wish to be & how we wish to be treated? Yes !but they certainly do not have to define who we currently are.

Those aspects don’t have to be your entire identity - they are pieces of you that brought you to where you are right now.

No one is shamed for having diabetes or heart disease. Likewise, no one should be shamed for having a mental health diagnosis.

It is time to start looking at people as individuals, not just as a cluster of symptoms. People are so much more than just a label or a diagnosis.

Boundaries are the mental, emotional, and physical limits to how others can treat you, behave around you, and what they can expect from you

Boundaries are crucial. When we set them appropriately, we feel more peace in our life. When we struggle with setting boundaries, we feel violated, stressed, and out of control.

A lack of personal boundaries can result in feelings of being worthless, weak, or not good enough. In other words, our self-esteem is severely impacted and we might struggle with issues such as chronic self-doubt or self-loathing. Not being able to voice our truth and communicate our needs in a clear way can be deeply distressing.

If you're struggling with boundaries, seek help! Therapy can help you practice boundary-setting skills and better understand why this is an issue.

For many, mental health problems are still considered a taboo. Imagine telling your boss: ‘I am sorry, I had to call in sick because I was so depressed I could not get out of bed’. There is a lot of stigma and judgment coming from others regarding mental health. Even from family, friends, lovers, colleagues.

With mental health awareness, it is important to debunk some famous mental health myths. For example, a few mental health myths that still exist like:

🔸People with mental health issues can't have a job

🔸Going to therapy means you are weak

🔸Mental health issues mean you can’t function

🔸 Violence is always a result of mental health issues

🔸Mental health problems cannot be prevented

🔸Issues with mental health mean you are ‘crazy’

🔸Mental illness is always inherited and in the family

🔸You can never recover from mental health issues

ABOVE STATEMENTS = NOT TRUE.

Often when we say the words “mental health” people assume that we are referring to mental illness - however we all have a state of mental health, just as we all have a state of physical health.

Like our physical health may be better or worse at certain times in our lives, our mental health too will move through periods of being good but then perhaps not being so great - this is a natural and inevitable part of life.

Mental health is defined as “a state of well-being in which an individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and is able to make a contribution to his or her community”.
Just as we all do things to optimise our physical health such as going to the gym or eating nutritious food - we call all also do things to optimise our mental health - often processes such as therapy are like gyms for the mind.

Fear and anxiety can affect all of us every now and then. It is only when it is severe and long-lasting that doctors class it as a mental health problem.
If you feel anxious all the time for several weeks, or if it feels like your fears are taking over your life, then it’s a good idea to ask your doctor for help, or try one of this tips:

1. Relax. Do something for yourself that you enjoy, whether it is a massage, reading a book, soaking in a hot bath .

2. Face your fear if you can. Exposing yourself to your fears can be an effective way of overcoming this anxiety.

3. Healthy eating. Eat lots of fruit and vegetables, and try to avoid too much sugar. Resulting dips in your blood sugar can give you anxious feelings.

4. Complementary therapies. Some people find that complementary therapies or exercises, such as relaxation techniques, meditation, yoga, or t’ai chi, help them to deal with their anxiety.

5. Faith/spirituality. They can provide a way of coping with everyday stress, and attending faith groups can connect you with a valuable support network.

6. Talking therapies. Talking therapies, like counselling or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, are very effective for people with anxiety problems.

Burnout: not just applicable in the workplace.

The general idea is the same, working hard and getting nowhere. Putting in the effort and not seeing any results. The stuck-ness and lack of movement leads to feeling hopeless, unmotivated and often times numb.

If you’ve been seeing these signs show up in your relationship, it doesn’t mean your relationship is doomed. But what you’re doing at the moment, definitely isn’t working. And sometimes, we’re working so hard, trying to perfect, fix, and “do” that we create problems where there aren’t any.

Take a step back and ask yourself: What am I forcing? What needs are not being met? Where and how have I disengaged from my relationship?

While physiological symptoms always get our attention, there’s always more layers to our wellbeing.

Holistic health is a way of caring and healing which incorporates all parts of ourselves (emotional, cognitive, behavioral, spiritual, physiological) and the interactions with our world (family, job, society, culture).

In this sense, we can also acknowledge how an imbalance in any of these individual areas can create an imbalance for the whole system.

When we say “I just don’t understand what is wrong with me or why I’m acting this way” chances are we’re missing something, another part of the puzzle that hasn’t been brought to out attention. If we take the time to expand and incorporate more layers we find that there is always a reason and purpose to it all.

How do you know when you need to ask for help?It could be a feeling of hopelessness and numbness...once you sense those creeping around, an alarm sounds off, it’s time to reach out!
