The Healing Power of Silence for the Vagus Nerve

In our noisy, fast-paced world, silence often feels rare but it’s one of the simplest ways to support your nervous system.

The vagus nerve, a key player in the body’s parasympathetic “rest and digest” response, thrives on moments of stillness.

When we’re surrounded by constant stimulation—notifications, conversations, traffic—the vagus nerve stays on alert.

This can keep the body stuck in stress mode, tightening muscles, quickening the breath and draining energy. Silence, on the other hand, invites the vagus nerve to reset.

In quiet moments, the breath naturally slows, heart rate steadies and tension begins to release. Research shows that silence can lower blood pressure, ease anxiety, and boost heart rate variability—an important marker of vagal tone. It’s as if the nervous system finally gets permission to exhale.

Practicing silence doesn’t have to mean long meditations or retreats. Even two minutes of stillness—turning off music, sitting without your phone or walking in nature—can strengthen vagal regulation and restore balance.

By giving yourself pockets of silence, you’re not just resting your mind—you’re nourishing one of the body’s most powerful healing pathways.

Pausing to take a breath creates space for awareness and intentionality, which can transform reactions into thoughtful responses.

It’s a small practice with profound ripple effects on how we engage with situations and our relationship with others.

Would you like tips on how to cultivate this habit further?

I missed this, apparently this aired on Monday evening. Good to see as mindfulness doesn’t receive a huge amount of publicity! (even though it’s incredibly helpful!)

On Monday 13th January 2025 I was featured in an ITV News piece about mindfulness teaching a session and a short interview. This was filmed at the beautiful ...

“Be where your feet are. The present moment is the only place where life exists.”

Walking barefoot on the lawn is a wonderful way of connecting to the present moment.
Feel the grass between your toes and the soft texture underfoot.

Listen out for the sounds of nature - birds singing,

Smell the fresh scent of the earth and the grass.
Notice the subtle fragrances carried by the breeze - blooming flowers, damp soil or the crisp morning air.

Feel the warmth of the sun on your skin or the coolness of the ground beneath your feet.

As you immerse yourself in these sensations, let your mind settle. Allow the worries of the past and concerns for the future to fade away.

This moment, with its rich tapestry of sensations, is where life truly unfolds.
Be fully here, grounded and connected to the now.
