What are platysmal bands?

The platysma helps with facial expressions such as pulling the corners of the mouth downward and tightening the neck. In youth, the muscle is smooth and lies flat under the skin. As we get older, the muscle can weaken and split into distinct edges, which then become more noticeable as vertical neck bands.

Why do platysmal bands appear and start to sag?

Several factors contribute to their development:

1. Aging and loss of skin elasticity
As collagen and elastin levels decrease with age, the skin becomes thinner and less firm. This allows the underlying muscle structure to show more clearly.

2. Muscle activity over time
Repeated facial movements (talking, chewing, expressing emotion) cause the platysma muscle to contract frequently. Over years, this constant movement can cause the muscle edges to tighten and stand out.

3. Gravity
Natural downward pull causes both skin and muscle to descend. As support structures weaken, the neck area begins to droop, making bands more visible.
