Sorry folks, we have been bad at keeping you up to date lately!

Like many small businesses, covid has affected us significantly, meaning that Vicki and I have had to place a focus on our full time roles to ensure an income for our families, particularly at what has been, and is continuing to be a tough time for many families.

Here are however, some further dates for our online sessions. These are bookable via our website, check out the details on our poster. 😊

Currently we are offering the online sessions and home sessions only for our First Aid for Parents and Family and First Aid for Weaning sessions.

As specific restrictions are still in place in regard to isolation rules, we feel it is safer to continue to minimise the risk where possible for our course attendees, so we are not booking face to face sessions in venues across Northern Ireland at the moment.

Better to be safe particularly our little ones and vulnerable loved ones. ❤

Pop us a message if you are interested in a home session and we will give you more info. 😊

As it edges closer to Easter, here comes our annual reminder regarding Choking Hazards. 😳

Did you know Mini Eggs carry a warning of not suitable for under 4’s on their packaging?

Mini Eggs are just the right size to block a young child’s airway.

❗️If you are giving them to young children it’s best to break them into smaller pieces.

This may reduce the risk of choking but the harder parts can still be problematic.

The best solution is you eat them instead, problem solved! 😂

We wish you all a happy & safe Easter 🐣

If your baby chokes its important to stay calm and start the emergency sequence.

When I say stay calm I know it’s easier said than done, but, if you choke your muscles tighten and spasm around the object. If you panic, the child will sense that and they may tense further.

Stay calm, pick baby up and support the head and neck. Ideally pop Baby across your lap (head low bum high).

Using the heel of the hand deliver up to 5 back blows in between the shoulder blades.

If unsuccessful and the baby is still choking, turn them over so face up and deliver up to 5 chest thrusts using two fingers in the centre of the chest.

Chest thrusts are very much like a chest compression but are slightly sharper/more vigorous in nature.

Repeat if needed. If baby goes unconscious start CPR making sure help is on the way!

Reshare from The Lullaby Trust

If you co-sleep or there’s a chance you might fall asleep in bed with your baby, it’s important to keep the space around your baby clear of bedding, pillows and duvets. This means that when or if you fall asleep, there’s nothing around them that could obstruct their airways or cause them to overheat.

Check out for more advice on safer co-sleeping.

⚠️ PILLOWS AND DUVETS ⚠️

Pillows and duvets can make it difficult for babies to breathe as they don't have good head control to move.

Do not use pillows and duvets for babies under 12 months of age - ideally wait until they move to a toddler bed.

Pillows and duvets can make your baby too hot which increases the risk of SIDS.

Aim for a room temperature of between 16 and 21 degrees. 🌡

Keep the cot clear - no pillows, no duvets, no toys and no bumpers.

😴 Safer Sleep Week 😴

Babies sleeping in their own sleep space, in your room, for the first 6 months, can reduce the incidence of SIDS by up to 50% (88% of SIDS happen in the first 6 months)

Your babies sleep space should be as follows:-

✅ Firm, flat, waterproof mattress -a waterproof surface stops bacteria breeding so less chance of causing infection

✅ Back to Sleep - since the Back to Sleep campaign was launched in 1991 SIDS has reduced by 80%

✅ Clear cot - if cots are made to British Standards then there should be no need to cover bars with bumpers to prevent injury. Cots should be kept clear of toys

This cot may look ‘pretty’, but not everything you see on social media is recommended for your baby.

Whether you co-sleep or your baby sleeps in a cot, it’s vital that you keep their sleep space as clear as possible. All your baby needs is a simple blanket or baby sleep bag and a firm, flat sleep space that is clear of toys, bulky bedding and cot bumpers.

Today we are highlighting the message from The Lullaby Trust and showing examples of a safe sleeping environment with a focus on twins as we don’t often see safe sleep advice for them.

Carers of twins may choose to put them separate from birth or they may choose to safely co-bed them. Co-bedding is safe for non mobile babies.

Safe sleep advice should still be followed:

✅ Babies should sleep on their backs

✅ A smoke free pregnancy and home environment is recommended (contact us if you need details for stop smoking support)

✅ Use a flat, firm and waterproof mattress

✅ Cots should be free from hazards

Babies can be at opposite ends each on their backs, feet to foot, with loose blankets tucked under the armpits.

Babies can be side by side sleeping, where it was warm enough, with no blankets or, with a blanket under the arms, or, with a sleeping bag.

For more in depth advice on twin sleeping go to The Lullaby Trust website where you will find lots of safe sleep advice for all sorts of different scenarios.
