Autoimmune diseases now affect more women than ever—nearly 80% of all cases are found in women. New studies are pointing to a powerful underlying factor: chronic emotional suppression and the stress it creates within the body.

When emotions like grief, anger, or anxiety are held in and never expressed, the body absorbs the tension. This silent stress activates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, flooding the system with stress hormones like cortisol. Over time, this disrupts immune regulation and can lead to the body attacking its own healthy cells.

Women, in many cultures, are conditioned to be the caretakers, peacekeepers, and emotional anchors. Often, they are encouraged to stay composed, polite, and quiet—even when hurting inside. This emotional silencing may offer temporary social stability, but internally, it builds a storm.

Based in the Montrose area and want to get involved with practical conservation work? We’re looking for volunteers in the Montrose, Brechin and Johnshaven areas to carry out feeder box surveys. This involves walking two hours every fortnight to collect hair samples from feeder boxes. Full training will be given. No prior knowledge or experience needed, but you will need your own transport and some of the surveys may involve walking across rough terrain.

Good to see this large international study from Edinburgh university looking at the impact of diet on endometriosis.

As nutritional therapists following a functional medicine approach this is nothing new and diet has a significant role to play in reducing inflammation. But we also consider many more aspects such as gut health and liver detoxification which have a profound effect on hormone balancing. We also consider the impact of environmental toxins on oestrogen levels and regarding food it gets even more complex for some as increased histamine from mast cell activation can contribute to pain and inflammation. Interestingly increased oestrogen can cause increased histamine and vice versa so it can become a vicious cycle. As always the key is in finding your why.

“Dietary changes could reduce the pain of endometriosis for half of those living with the disease, a new study suggests. The largest international survey ever conducted on diet and endometriosis, involving 2,599 people, found 45% of those who stopped eating gluten and 45% of those who cut out dairy reported experiencing an improvement in their pain.

When women cut down on coffee or other caffeine in their diet, 43% said their pain was reduced.
