This is Martha Mills 🩵

Martha sadly died in 2021 after developing sepsis in hospital, where she had been admitted with a pancreatic injury after falling off her bike. Martha’s family’s concerns about her deteriorating condition were not responded to, and in 2023 a coroner ruled that Martha, aged 13, would probably have survived had she been moved to intensive care earlier 😞

As a result of Martha’s tragic death, Martha’s Rule was developed. This recognises that those who know the patient best may be the first to notice changes that could be an early sign of deterioration 🩵

It alerts us to the importance of listening to and acting on the concerns of patients, families and carers 🩵

Hospitals now have a dedicated phone number for patients or their relatives when they have serious concerns for their welfare 👍

The hospital staff are also fully aware of Martha’s Rule and can give you advice.

At our local Blackpool Victoria Hospital, the number is 01253 955588 ☎️

For more information about Martha, and how we are trying to change things for the better, see the link below ⬇️

Ketamine use has become a big problem ☹️

It may seem like a good idea, cheap, no hangover, and readily available, but the reality is, Ketamine slowly kills your bladder ☠️

Those ‘K Holes’ also make you vulnerable to injury and exploitation, as you can’t remember anything about them 🤯

As health care providers, the amount of young people and young adults having to undergo bladder surgery and other treatments, is extremely worrying 😕

Take a look at the video below ⬇️

Listen to Dr Nigel Laycock, and hear a real life experience story from Finley.

Ketamine will ruin your life, and very quickly.

Stop, before it’s too late 🛑

🚨 Exceptional demand continues across our local NHS services

Due to continuing high levels of demand for NHS services, measures remain in place to reduce pressures. Thank you for your help. Please continue to:

✅ Use A&E only for serious or life-threatening emergencies.
✅ Collect loved ones, who are ready to leave hospital, as soon as possible and make sure they have what they need at home.
✅ Be aware that, if you do need A&E, you may experience a wait.

Our teams will see the most seriously ill patients first - please treat staff with respect.

If you have to visit A&E, due to a serious accident or emergency that is life threatening, please make sure you are prepared for a potential wait by taking things you may need like a charged phone, a payment method and warm, comfortable clothing. We apologise if you experience a longer wait.

Please use health services wisely. Accessing the right service at the right time may mean you’re seen quicker and helps reduce pressure.

Please remember that vaccinations significantly reduce the risk of severe illnesses and hospitalisation. Find out how to get vaccinated on the ICB website - https://orlo.uk/Gor2K

Please share this message with your colleagues and networks.

Thank you to our incredible NHS teams and partners working tirelessly across hospitals, community services and the region.

Rates of flu are causing a significant impact on the NHS with hospital admission figures higher and earlier than in previous years.

The flu vaccine can help protect yourself and others in the severity and spread of this illness, please contact your GP practice to discuss having it.

Demand in Morecambe UTC continues to be high. As always, please use the 111 service in order to book an appointment which will reduce wait times rather than walking in were possible.

‘Movember’ is Men’s Health Awareness Month is celebrated annually to draw attention to physical and mental health challenges facing men. We will be sending out information to encourage men to prioritize their well-being through early detection of issues like prostate and testicular cancer, addressing mental health, and promoting overall health and wellness.

The first is ‘Grab your Gonads’, a humorous twist on the importance of checking testicles regularly!

Make an appointment to see your GP if you notice any changes (lumps / swellings / dull abdominal ache / blood in your semen).

September is Sepsis Month and today is World Sepsis Day!

Across the world it’s an opportunity to raise both healthcare and public awareness of this condition.

In Morecambe and Fleetwood Urgent Treatment Centre we have resources on display showing the signs in both adults and children. We also have leaflets available on both Sepsis and Spotting the unwell child.

Please take a moment to look at these as Sepsis tragically claims 48,000 lives in the UK each year.
