Masking in autism doesn’t always look the same.

Masking is often talked about as “hiding behaviours”, but in reality it can be much more complex.

It can involve learning how to act in a way that feels socially acceptable, even when it doesn’t feel natural.

This might look like:
🗣️ Rehearsing conversations before speaking
👀 Copying how others interact
👁️ Forcing eye contact
🤔 Constantly monitoring how you come across

Masking can also present differently.

Some autistic men may be more likely to withdraw or avoid social situations.

Some autistic women are more likely to mirror others, people-please, and push themselves to appear socially confident.

Because of this, masking is one of the reasons autism is often missed, particularly in adults and in women.

If you’ve ever felt like you’re constantly managing how you come across, or something hasn’t quite added up, it may be worth exploring whether autism could be part of the picture.

If you want to understand this further, you can find more information on our website or send us a message.

Built by parents, made by Unique Kidz 💜

Back in 2009, two mums – Jane and Denise – set out to create something they couldn’t find anywhere else. A place where their children, and others like them, could have fun, make friends and be themselves.

What started as a Summer Holiday Club quickly became so much more. A place families could trust. A space where parents and carers could take a moment to rest, knowing their young people were safe, supported and happy, the whole year-round.

Both Jane and Denise bring lived experience as parent carers, and that’s shaped everything Unique Kidz and Co is today.

Jane, now Chair of Trustees, is still on hand with support and advice (and the occasional big clear out… usually with a bit of Elvis playing 🎶)

Denise, our Company Secretary, keeps everything running smoothly behind the scenes and brings a real understanding of the journey families are on.

Together, they’ve helped grow Unique Kidz and Co into what it is today — supporting children and young adults with disabilities and their families across North Lancashire.

And this July, they’re taking on the Iceland Fire & Ice Trek as part of our amazing team of trekkers🌋

It all started with two mums, making a difference for their children and their friends 💜

Do you over-analyse social situations?

Many autistic people spend social situations:
🔹 analysing conversations
🔹 managing sensory input
🔹 masking behaviours that might feel natural to them

All of this takes a significant amount of mental energy.

From the outside, it can look like someone is coping well. Internally, it can feel draining, especially after situations that others seem to handle easily.

Understanding this experience can help explain why social interaction feels so tiring, and why recovery time is often needed afterwards.

We are MindMapFocus, based in Morecambe 📍 providing autism and ADHD assessments for children, young people and adults.

Our approach is:
🔹 evidence-based
🔹 face-to-face
🔹 priced in line with NHS services
🔹 flexible payment options
🔹 no waiting lists

If you’ve been wondering whether autism could explain some of these experiences for you or your child, it might be worth exploring it further.

Symptoms of social anxiety can sometimes make autism harder to recognise. Social anxiety and autism can look very similar on the surface.

👀 Avoiding eye contact
🗣️ Struggling with conversations
😣 Feeling uncomfortable in social situations

Because of this, some people are treated for anxiety for years without ever being asked deeper questions.

What if there is something else behind how you’re feeling?

Understanding the difference comes down to looking at the individual experience and identifying what is actually driving the anxiety.

That’s where evidence-based assessment matters.

This year’s World Health Day theme is “Together for health. Stand with science.”

It’s a reminder that the right support starts with the right understanding.

When it comes to ADHD and autism, that means looking beyond assumptions and using evidence-based assessment to get a clearer picture.

If you’ve ever felt like it might be more than anxiety, or something hasn’t quite added up, it may be worth exploring whether autism could be part of the picture.

April is World Autism Acceptance Month 🌈 This month is about recognising the wide range of autistic experiences that exist.

Some people have known for years.

Some are only just beginning to understand themselves.

Some are still searching for answers.

Autism does not look one way, and it is not experienced in one way.

For many people, understanding autism is not just about diagnosis.

It is about finally having language for experiences that have never quite made sense.

If you have been questioning whether autism might explain some of your own experiences or your child’s, taking the time to understand it properly can make a real difference.

💙💛 Finding Our Feet at The SEND Den – Euston Road 💛💙

We just wanted to share a little update now that we are officially open at The SEND Den on Euston Road.
Right now, we are still very much finding our feet. We are brand new, learning what works best, getting used to our own routines, and listening carefully to what families need from us. Thank you for your patience while we grow into this next chapter.

At the moment, most of our timetable is Open to All sessions, alongside some private hire sessions and under 5s sessions. This isn’t set in stone. It’s simply our starting point while we see what works best for our community.

We are already working behind the scenes on regular clubs and activities including things like:

🧱 LEGO Club
🎨 Craft Club
🎬 Cinema Nights
✨ And lots more ideas we can't wait to introduce

It’s all coming… but if we’re honest, we’re expecting half term to be wonderfully busy! So once we get through the half term madness, we’ll be putting a big focus on developing these extra sessions and clubs.

While we are definitely finished enough to open our doors, we are not quite finished with our vision. There is still so much more to add, improve and build, and we absolutely love that you are here watching us grow into what we know The SEND Den can become.

Once we settle into a new routine after half term, we will also be looking again at offering more pop-up sessions across Lancashire and Cumbria because reaching as many families as possible has always been part of our mission.

And yes… we are still waiting like giddy children for updates about Ryelands 👀 That dream hasn’t gone anywhere. It isn’t cancelled, just temporarily on hold while we make the most of what we can do right now.

As many of you know, we continue to fundraise. In many ways we need support now more than ever. We’ve moved from hall hire costs to consistent, large monthly overheads, but we took that leap because families needed this space now, not years down the line.
If anyone would still like to support us, we are always incredibly grateful for:

💛 Visits and session bookings
💛 Kind donations via bank transfer
💛 Sensory or play equipment donations
💛 Support through our Amazon Wishlist

Most importantly, what we need now is for people to use the space, tell others about us, and help us continue to grow into everything we know this can be.

We built this for you. For your families. For a community that needed somewhere to belong.

Thank you for being part of our journey so far. The best is still to come.

Much love from all of us at The SEND Den 💙💛💙💛💙💛💙💛💙💛💙💛
