Anxiety is often accompanied by measurable changes in breathing patterns, including rapid, shallow (thoracic) breathing, which can reinforce physiological stress responses.

Controlled breathing techniques have been shown to activate the parasympathetic nervous system, supporting reductions in heart rate, cortisol levels and overall physiological arousal.

Evidence-based approaches such as diaphragmatic breathing, cyclic sighing and structured breathing patterns (e.g. 4-7-8) may help interrupt the anxiety cycle and improve emotional regulation when practised consistently.

While generally safe, breathing interventions may not be appropriate for all individuals. Clinical guidance is recommended for those with respiratory conditions, trauma history or panic-related symptoms.
