We haven't had a lot of time for our veggie garden this year, so we have focussed on herbs, and supporting our insect wildlife instead!

So we had a bit of a setback with our queen bee that arrived in May - the cold weather and persistent north westerly winds upset her and she took off for pastures new.

Upsetting though it was, when we spoke with our very own experienced JoB - science teacher and beekeeper extraordinaire, she informed us that the weather has played havoc with hives this year. As you will know, the long wet winter and cold spring has been a disaster for insects, including well established bee colonies.

So we decided to go to Ash who owns Dartmoor Beekeeping and provides excellent beekeeping courses (which our staff attend). Ash has nurtured and produced a beautiful nuc of native bees which arrived with a very productive queen and thousand of bees on Friday!

Fingers crossed the weather stays warm so they can build their colony into the autumn and winter.

Today was the day the baby tried on the big boys gear.

Sonny allowed me to try the harness on him for the very first time. He was an absolute star.

Jack on the other hand, was having none of it.

Even though they are both the same age, it just goes to show the difference in how they develop and grow. Sonny was ready, Jack is not there yet, although he will stick his nose through the collar!

Today we added a new colony of bees to our meadows and traditional apple orchard. The bees arrived in a jiffy bag by post (!) and were introduced to a new international hive where we hope they will live happily and pollinate our apple trees!

Whilst we were there we took a look through the viewing window of our existing top bar hive... the busy bees were very... busy!
