A Different Kind of Normal
Author & Illustrator: Abigail Balfe
International Cat Day
We have tied in A Spotlight on ADHD week with today being international cat day! We have seen a lot of ADHD children mask as animals, mostly cats or have a very keen affiliation with cats, just as Abigail does in A Different Kind of Normal.
We believe it is really important for children to be able to express themselves via these personas and can often give us clues as to what they feel is missing to them (for more information on this, read yesterdays post on attention). Persona of a baby can often represent missing blocks when growing up or a big change in their lives (siblings, house moves etc) and pets can often show the need for attention like you would cuddle a pet.
This can be used to an advantage for trying new foods “a cat would eat chicken” and to go off exploring “walkies”. Connect with your pet making animal beds, drawing the animals together and asking them what they look like in their animal form.
This can also be a way of masking or coping when situations are too overwhelming.
Equally support their way of representing themselves.
