Greenhill Genealogy offers a range of family history research services, courses and workshops in Birmingham and the West Midlands

Greenhill Genealogy is owned by myself, Liz Palmer, a qualified genealogist having graduated in 2013 with a Postgraduate Diploma in Genealogical, Palaeographic and Heraldic Studies from the University of Strathclyde. I had 8 years of experience working in Archives and Heritage at the Library of Birmingham (formerly Birmingham Central Library) assisting customers on a wide range of family and local history matters. My own family history researches include a dynasty of Ag Labs on the Palmer line, shoe manufacturers amongst the Hodgkins family, butchers and confectioners on the Morgan side and vicars, civil servants, military officers, merchants, privateers and even a couple of Crimean nurses in the Bandinel/Le Mesurier family. The latter had origins in the Channel Islands but their varied activities took them to every continent. I now underte research on a freelance basis for a range of clients predominantly focusing on Birmingham and West Midlands records. In addition I have researched into the outcomes for several children migrated to Canada in the 19th Century by Middlemore Homes. My central location means that I am ideally situated for visiting any of the record offices and archives within the West Midlands including Birmingham, the Black Country, Warwick, Worcester and Stafford/Lichfield. I also visit the National Archives and am a member of the British Library. Represent delves into the period following World War One and The Representation of the People Act in 1918, exploring issues around political representation and organisation and parallels today. This exhibition features stories of how Birmingham’s people tried to make change and showcases banners created by two community groups who have taken inspiration from political organising a century ago. Birmingham Heritage Week
We have a weekend of heritage to explore in Moseley including two offerings by St Mary's.
On Saturday 10-12 head into the church to find out about bell ringing and to have a go.
On Sunday afternoon 2-5 we'll be in the Courtyard (off St Mary's Row) as we recreate the sights and sounds of the forge that had stood on this site for centuries - Paul Ashmore, a heritage blacksmith, will be firing up his forge (his enthusiasm for all things metal is infectious). Liz Palmer of Greenhill Genealogy has researched the Village blacksmiths from the mid 19th century to the early 20th century, we tell their fascinating stories. For a chance to win one of two family tickets to Jorvik's Dig in York (thanks to Jorvik) we launch our archaeology themed competition. And if this isn't enough we have the talented Glittercreep with us bringing you her fabulous face and body painting - it's not just for the children!
With Highbury Hall, Dovecote, Ice House and Moseley Hall Hospital to also explore why go anywhere else this weekend?

I now undertake research on a freelance basis for a range of clients and recent projects have included delving into Lithuanian Jewish ancestry both in Europe and the USA, Glasgow Poorhouse records and families in British India although I primarily focus on Birmingham and West Midlands records. I enjoy assisting clients to undertake their own research and have run several successful family history courses and workshops. I have also worked on several community history projects including co-ordinating the Birmingham Children of War Project for the Friends of Birmingham Archives & Heritage, Stories from the Stones with the Moseley Churchyard Heritage and Access Project and several collaborations with the Peoples’ Heritage Project including their Represent! project in 2019.

I regularly give talks to family & local history groups and community groups on aspects of family and local history. Current topics include the Middlemore Child Migration Homes, ‘An Accident Waiting to Happen’ about the 1859 explosion in a Birmingham percussion cap manufactory; ‘Chuggers of WW1’ about early charity flags & collection days; Birmingham & Solihull Suffragettes & How to research your house history. My central location means that I am ideally situated for visiting any of the record offices and archives within the West Midlands including Birmingham, the Black Country, Warwick, Worcester and Stafford/Lichfield. I also visit the National Archives and am a member of the British Library.
