Parent Prep Sessions. Because Life After Birth Matters Just as Much

So much attention goes into preparing for the birth…
but many parents tell me they wished they had spent just as much time preparing for those precious, and challenging first weeks at home.

My Parent Prep Sessions are designed to do exactly that.
As a midwife, health visitor and postnatal doula, I’ll guide you through the essential knowledge and practical skills that make early parenthood feel calmer, more manageable, and more confident.

We’ll cover:
👶 Newborn cues & behaviour

🍼 Infant feeding (breast and bottle)

🛁 Practical newborn care – bathing, nappy changing, safe sleep

🤱 What mums can expect physically & emotionally after birth

💛 Tips to support your recovery and ease the transition into family life

These sessions don’t focus on birth itself, instead, they prepare you for the realities of life after baby arrives, helping you feel supported, reassured, and ready.

Available as private 1:1 sessions or small friendly groups.
If you want those early weeks to feel less overwhelming and more empowered, I’d love to support you.

Tying your baby wrap can feel a little daunting at first… all that fabric and wondering where it goes.
The key thing to remember is this, you’re creating a secure, supportive pouch for your baby before they even go in.

When you’re putting your wrap on:

✨ Start with it nice and tight around your body, it should feel like a fitted top, not loose or saggy

✨ Make sure the fabric is spread evenly across your shoulders so the weight is well distributed

✨ Keep everything flat and untwisted. This helps with both comfort and support

✨ Tie it securely at your waist, so it stays in place when you move

Before baby even goes in, take a moment to check — does it feel snug and supportive? If yes, you’ve created the perfect foundation

Once your wrap is on properly, everything else becomes so much easier and safer for your baby.

Like anything new, it can take a few goes to feel confident, but you’ll get there

And remember, you don’t have to figure it out alone. I’m always here if you need a little extra guidance. I teach this in my private and group, parent prep session.

Carrying your baby close isn’t just practical… it’s powerful

Baby wraps are one of the simplest ways to nurture connection while keeping your hands free, and they can make such a difference in those early weeks (and beyond!).

Here are 5 beautiful benefits of using a baby wrap:
✨ Supports bonding – Keeping your baby close helps strengthen your emotional connection and promotes that all-important sense of security.

✨ Soothes your baby – The gentle movement, warmth, and familiarity of your heartbeat can help calm fussiness and reduce crying.

✨ Encourages better sleep – Many babies settle more easily and nap longer when held snugly in a wrap.

✨ Hands-free convenience – Whether you’re making a cup of tea or caring for older children, wraps allow you to stay close while getting things done.

✨ Supports breastfeeding – Babywearing can make feeding more responsive and accessible, especially in those early days.

If you’ve ever felt like your baby just wants to be held all day… you’re not doing anything wrong. They’re simply being a baby

And a wrap can be a gentle, supportive way to meet that need while also looking after yourself.

Using a material sling to carry your baby is a simple, natural way to keep them close while still having your hands free, and it can make everyday life feel so much easier.

Key principles to follow:

✔️ Baby is close enough to kiss

✔️ Face is always visible (not covered by fabric)

✔️ Airway is clear, with chin off the chest

✔️ Back is supported in a gentle, natural curve

✔️ Hips are in an “M” shape position for healthy development

✔️ Sling feels snug and secure

✔️ Weight is evenly distributed for your comfort

The benefits go far beyond just convenience. Being held close helps your baby feel safe and secure, and can regulate their temperature, breathing, and heart rate. It often reduces crying and can really support bonding and attachment, especially in those early days. Many parents also find it helps with responsive feeding and settling a fussy baby.

For you, it brings a sense of freedom. You can move around more easily, get things done, or look after other children without needing to put your baby down. When worn correctly, a sling can also feel much more comfortable than carrying your baby in your arms.
A sling isn’t just about carrying your baby, it’s about staying connected, building confidence, and making those everyday moments a little bit easier.

Everyone's experience in those early weeks is different. But all agree, it's a rollercoaster of a ride. It's fraught with guild, uncertainty and trepidation.

It's important to talk to other's who are going through the experience, it brings a sense of 'I'm not the only one feeling/experiencing this'.

In my 15+ years of working with mums, babies and families. Here are some of the things I regularly encounter.

🩷 Babies are born to be next to their mum. In those early weeks, they don't even recognise that they are separate from you. You're their safe space, their food source. In my parent prep session, I teach parents how to use the 'baby wrap'. This gives mum's free hands, whilst keeping baby close.

🩷 You're not only giving birth to a baby, you're giving birth to a new version of yours. There's even a word for it... Matrescence! The changes are physical, emotional, mental and spiritual.

🩷 Preparation is important, but some days, you'll still feel like you're fumbling in the dark. That you don't have a clue. That's ok, babies don't come with a manual.

🩷 As much as you love your baby. Some days, you'll wish for your old life. Long lies and carefree days. Everyone feels like this at some point. Better gentle with yourself during these times.

🩷 And if that love for your baby doesn't come straight away, know that this can be normal too. This could be down to a range of factors. We all envisage how parenthood is going to look. No one expects to not fall in love straight away.

The early weeks come with so many emotions and feelings. Allow yourself to feel them and move through you. Importantly, speak to someone. You never know, they could be feeling the same.

Becoming a mum is one of the most transformative experiences in life… but somewhere along the way many women stop prioritising themselves.

The focus shifts completely to the baby, feeding, settling, nappies, sleep, and mums often come last on the list.
But the truth is: a supported, nourished mum is better able to care for her baby.

Prioritising yourself doesn’t mean you’re selfish. It means you’re human.

Here are 5 gentle ways new mums can begin to prioritise themselves:

✨ Rest when you can – Sleep deprivation is real in the early days. Even short rests can make a difference.

✨ Accept help – Whether it’s someone holding the baby while you shower, making a meal, or doing a load of washing. You don’t have to do it all alone.

✨ Step outside – Fresh air and a short walk can do wonders for your mood and energy levels.

✨ Nourish your body – Regular meals, snacks and staying hydrated support recovery and breastfeeding too.

✨ Talk about how you’re feeling – Motherhood brings a huge emotional shift. Sharing how you feel with someone you trust can be incredibly supportive.

Motherhood isn’t meant to be done in isolation.
Support matters, and so do you.

So many times you will hear 'sleep when the baby sleeps'. But, I know from experience that you just put pressure on yourself and that hinders you.

So, I say 'rest when the baby is sleeping'. This means, no phone, no TV, no electronics of any kind. Just relax! Have a guilt free hour where you're doing nothing. There's a good chance you might fall asleep anyway. But rest can be just as beneficial.

I remember this feeling myself all too well.
You feel confident and in the hospital, when the midwives are around.

You get home from the hospital and realise you are now responsible for a tiny little human.

Preparation and support that focuses on the weeks after the birth can help ease the worries.
