Baking dreams went up in smoke this afternoon . 🙃 But this little disaster actually brought a big lesson from Buddhist philosophy: the parable of the two arrows.
👉 Arrow #1: The actual, physical pain of seeing my time, ingredients, and anticipation turn into charcoal. That initial sting of disappointment. This is unavoidable pain. It happened.
👉 Arrow #2: The mental anguish I choose to add on top. The self-talk: “I’m a terrible baker,” “I wasted money,” “My session will be ruined,” “Why do I always mess things up?” This is the suffering.
The core teaching is this: You cannot control the first arrow (the cake burning). That’s life happening to you. But the second arrow—the unnecessary mental melodrama and judgment—is entirely self-inflicted and completely optional.
Today, I’m wiping the metaphorical soot off my face. I’m letting the second arrow fly right by. It’s just a cake. I’ll make another using a back up cake mix or even buy one on the way 🧘♀️🧁🥮. As parents we often have these moments, things don’t work out how we have planned 😜
