Some really big thoughts and feelings going on this week and I feel I need to say something, I know a lot of people that come to my classes aren’t hearing any of the stuff that’s going on in the Ashtanga community but I think it’s always important to empower the students and let them know they are the ones in control. My words aren’t terribly eloquent but hopefully they make sense ♥️
The yoga teacher has a big job to do and that’s to create and hold space for the practice and the community. Teachers aren’t there to dictate, the teacher student relationship is a workshop to build, create, adapt and learn how to fit the practice to the student. Really the teacher should be trying to make themselves redundant, to share everything they know and leave the student confident that they can mould every part of the practice to fit what they need at any specific time. This process may never be finished for some but for others they learn all they can and maybe move on to another teacher, the learning is never done and not one person knows everything. The student should feel safe, empowered, able to ask questions and that they can choose not to do anything or do something different without being treated negatively because they aren’t doing what the teacher wants or what the “lineage dictates”. If this isn’t how your yoga teacher makes you feel maybe they aren’t the right one for you and teachers if this isn’t how you look after your students maybe you shouldn’t be teaching.
