I was watching a report on BBC Breakfast yesterday.
It was addressing the real problem of mental health issues associated with a life of being overweight, constantly dieting and feeling out of control.
It even talked about how hopeless it is for people with the 'fat gene'.
Whilst it's great to raise awareness, it offered no solutions or even hope for the poor lady in the report.
In all other areas of her life, she had a degree of control and was frustrated with the fact her capacity to maintain a healthy weight was 'impossible'.
The psychology is important here. She feels hopeless as she has tried everything and 'nothing works'.
Except I'll bet my house she hasn't tried everything.
You need 3 things to support long term, healthy weight maintenance.
You need a method that not only works, but is sustainable, which means not being hungry, 2 months after starting, not just the first week or two!
You need the right Mindset. Most people think they are weak willed and lack discipline. That's not true, if that's what they are experiencing, the mindset is wrong, that's all.
The third thing is motivation, consistent, sustained motivation. Now, this ties in with the first two pillars of weight management. If you are hungry, it's hard to stay motivated. If you are straining, using all your willpower to stick to a diet, you are going to fold at some point.
Motivation can be sustained however and my goal as a coach is not only to help someone lose 30lbs or fit into those jeans that have been in the cupboard for a decade or ..... just not have to think about their weight, constantly anymore.
It's showing people how it feels to have a sense of control, finally, over their weight. It's not me doing it, it's their victory and it's sweet.
If you feel 'hopeless', 'nothing works' or resigned to the idea you have the dreaded fat gene, there is hope. You can discover that sense of control and ultimately won't have to have a life tainted by the constant struggle.
Did I mention there's a catch?
Yes, that's life, sorry. You see you are going to have to step out of your comfort zone and that's... uncomfortable. You are going to have to let go of certain ideas about weight loss you are 100% convinced are true. Yet they are not.
You are going to be a little confused at first as you discover new knowledge about your weight and what's going on in your head.
But it's worth it, well worth it. As you can imagine.
If there's a part of you that's drawn to what you have just read, you can choose to give me a call and see where it goes, or you can ignore that voice and that's OK, timing is everything and it may not be the right time just yet.
Take care.
