On exam results day, it’s easy to feel like these grades define success or failure. But they’re just one step on the road of life.

I left Nairn Academy with 7 Highers and a clear plan: study Management with Finance at university and become a financial advisor. It felt like the “right” path — and for a while, it was.

But life had other ideas.

In my second year of university, my dad passed away suddenly. Everything changed overnight. I left uni to take over the family business — not because it was part of the plan, but because it was the right thing to do.

That was 14 years ago. Since then, I’ve had a career full of highs and lows, growth and learning. I’ve met incredible people from all walks of life, and found meaning and purpose in ways I never expected.

My school results didn’t define where I ended up. What shaped my journey were the things that can’t be graded — resilience, hard work, adaptability, and passion.

Exam results do not define your life. Find something that brings you passion and joy — and you won’t go far wrong.

Today, we said farewell to Tom Ross, founder of Tom Ross and Sons Funeral Directors, and later the proud custodian of David M Ellen Funeral Directors.

Tom was more than a businessman. He was a man of principle, compassion, hard work, and quiet strength. Under his leadership, the company had supported over 6,000 families in their time of need. He believed in doing things properly, with dignity and care, and he built a reputation rooted in trust, respect, and service to the community.

He gave generously to good causes and never turned his back on anyone in need. He was proud to serve the community, and proud of his family. He wanted the best for us—and expected the best from us. That expectation came from a place of love, belief, and high standards that shaped everything we did.

Alongside my father Brian, Tom laid the foundations of a business built on integrity and compassion. We remain committed to upholding those values and continuing the legacy he worked so hard to create.

On behalf of our family, thank you to everyone who has shared their kind words, memories, and support during this time. Your warmth has meant more to us than we can say.

Rest in peace, Granda.
We’ll continue to do you proud.
