HEIW and the National Imaging Academy Wales (NIAW) have launched Wales’ first accredited Adult Peripheral Venous Cannulation course for Radiology Clinical Support Workers! 💉

Developed in response to NHS Wales service needs, this Agored Cymru Level 3 course equips staff with the skills to safely perform cannulation, reducing waiting times and improving patient care.

HEIW supported NIAW to become an accredited centre and helped develop, implement, and quality assure the course. The pilot cohort received glowing feedback, with 100% of delegates finding the training engaging.

Cohort Two is now underway and will run until 2026, with HEIW gradually stepping back as NIAW takes the lead.

This collaboration is a brilliant example of how HEIW and NIAW are delivering modern, responsive education that strengthens NHS Wales services. 🙌

We’re proud to celebrate Briall, a student nurse and the first student to submit her entire practise portfolio and documents, entirely in Welsh at Swansea University.

https://heiw.nhs.wales/news/shaping-bilingual-education-healthcare/

Through much dedication and passion for her first language, Briall has shown how using Welsh in healthcare builds trust, improves communication and enhances patient care.💙

Delivering excellent education and training to support the delivery of quality patient care is a priority for HEIW and Briall’s story is a testament to this. It’s opened possibilities for future student nurses to follow in her steps to help develop a skilled and bilingual workforce.

Llongyfarchiadau Briall and good luck for your bright future ahead!🎉

We’re proud to celebrate Christopher Richards, the first associate member (support worker) elected to the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) Council! 👏

Christopher’s journey began with the Level 4 Therapies Assistant Practitioner (TAP) programme, supported by HEIW and piloted with Hywel Dda UHB and University of Wales Trinity Saint David. Since graduating in 2024, he’s become a national voice for support workers, helping shape the future of physiotherapy.

At the CSP Conference, he co-led the “Support Workers for the Future – Grow Your Own” symposium, sharing how research and work-based learning have transformed his career. Now serving a 4-year term on CSP Council, Christopher is influencing policy, leadership, and education across the UK.

The TAP programme is a Once for Wales initiative, bringing together Health Boards across the country to build a confident, future-ready workforce. With three successful cohorts and more on the way, it’s already changing lives by supporting learners into degrees, leadership, and beyond 🎓✨

❓ Interested in what we do❓

As the strategic workforce body for NHS Wales, one of our key responsibilities is to support workforce transformation and improvement across various health professions in NHS Wales.

HEIW CEO, Alex Howells explains more about our functions and strategic priorities in our Integrated Medium Term Plan (IMTP) video: 🔗 https://youtu.be/cvUicGGigbw

Here are some of the ways we have recently been supporting NHS Wales:

➡️ We are strengthening optometry in Wales. Independent Prescribing (IP) Optometrists across Wales are gaining vital, hands-on experience in community-based Advanced Training Practices (ATPs). Interested in getting involved? Contact: 📧 HEIW.optometryATP@wales.nhs.uk

Read more: https://heiw.nhs.wales/news/independent-prescribing-optometrists-completing-clinical-placements-in-community-advanced-training-practices-across-wales/

➡️ Healthcare professionals across Wales can now access updated e-learning modules to better support families during the perinatal period. 🔗 https://ytydysgu.heiw.wales/?redirectUrl=%2Fcourses%2Fdiscovery

This work supports our commitment to delivering high-quality education and training, and forms part of the Strategic Mental Health Workforce Plan, aligning with A Healthier Wales.

Over 500 learners have already engaged with positive feedback!

➡️ Since January 2024, 176 student nurses have completed General Practice Nursing (GPN) placements across Wales. These placements offer hands-on experience and an insight into working in primary care.

Read more about her inspiring journey and the impact of GPN placements: 🔗 https://heiw.nhs.wales/news/increased-numbers-of-nursing-students-gaining-valuable-primary-care-experience/

➡️ We’re celebrating - for the first time in 30 years, nursing students have trained in central north Wales.

Following the launch of HEIW’s commissioning contract with Wrexham University in 2022, the first cohort of nurses have graduated. Alongside Bangor University graduates, we’re increasing opportunities to study closer to home, gain placement experience and build nursing careers, serving local communities in North Wales.

A huge congratulations to all our nursing graduates across Wales

➡️ We’ve launched a new Workforce Planning Hub for NHS Wales staff, giving you quick access to tools, training, guidance and workforce information to support your planning activities.

Visit the hub on Sharepoint: 🔗 https://nhswales365.sharepoint.com/sites/HEI_Workforce_Planning_Hub/

This supports our goal of developing a skilled, confident workforce across NHS Wales, helping deliver better care for the people of Wales.
