Knee Osteoarthritis
A chronic, painful condition which can impact our day to day lives. The thinning of our cartilage causes a narrowing between your thigh (femur) and shin (tibia) bones.
The primary causes of pain in OA actually stem from inflammation within the bone, the thin outer layer of bone (periosteum) and inflammation of the synovium around the knee joint.
Therefore, one of the most effective treatments for knee OA is exercise. Which can increase bone density (and health), increase muscle strength and mass; great for supporting the knee joint and increasing our energy output (using more calories).
Previously labelled and attributed to "wear & tear" and thought to be a mechanical process, when it is our hormones, chemicals and proteins in our body which pre-dispose our cartilage to become weaker and thin.
Movement and exercise is absolutely key to improving your knee health, get in touch for more advice around this condition or to book in to start your road to improving knee health!
