Good morning everyone, this is a long post but please bear with me as it’s an important message.
Recently, I have seen a growing number of independent funeral directors addressing the alarming rise of a well known, relatively new nationwide company that carry out an unattended cremation service, heavily advertising on television, social media, post and telephone.
For those who don’t know, this is a cremation without a service in chapel or church or with anyone present.
My 90 year old Grandmother received in the post, a blanket mailer from them inviting her to purchase a pre paid plan for a Direct Cremation at a price of £1995.00. I think there was also a discount if she chose this before February.
At first, this was a bit of a joke between us as obviously when the time arises, there will only be one person who will be looking after her - me.
However, I quickly became alarmed at how little she understood about the way that these companies really worked. I realised that if she didn’t - many others would fall victim to the same.
She would be collected by employees who are not funeral industry trained, taken to a holding facility, most likely a warehouse on an industrial estate to then be transported via van with other deceased people to their own crematorium in Andover.
She didn’t have a clue that Andover was,
away from Sheffield, away from everyone who knew and loved her.
She was horrified - this is the truth of using companies like this one. The truth that doesn’t appear on day time tv commercials or these blanket mail outs. The target audience are the elderly or ill informed.
I am a fourth generation funeral director, I take the upmost pride and care in what I do and the position I hold, the very nature of our industry is that we don’t shout about what we do, we remain a silent and steadfast hand to hold at the worst possible time for families.
Never would we arrange a funeral, whether direct or traditional without explaining each step carefully so that all involved know exactly what it entails.
Companies like this go against everything we all stand for. The care and diginity to those who have left us - and the care to those who are left behind.
Times change and with it, people’s choices have sometimes looked towards a ‘Direct Cremation’ any local independent Funeral Director will provide this service, the difference being - we are professionals and the care and service of loved ones we provide is unmatched.
I can speak for ourselves that our charges are significantly less, in our case our Direct Cremation fee is £1595.00 with absolutely no compromise on the quality of care.
We only have one chance to say goodbye, when the time comes that you have to, use someone you trust; If in any doubt, please, always pick up the phone to your local independent funeral director.
