So ,I completed this book this morning. What a fascinating and informative read if not shocking and sad at the same time. Mental health has shifted and changed in how it reveals itself and is labelled but the overriding message is for me that our brains are so complex that we need to approach mental health with a gentle touch ,with compassion and curiosity towards the person suffering. This has improved but sadly is still sorely lacking. Our system,is just that still,a system which is clinical and it needs a soul, soft edges. The other reminder from the book is that the mental health of a society is a reflection of how society is working. This isn't about wealth and materialism but the spiritual aspect of meaning and connection which I feel is reflected in the huge spread of poor mental health particularly in our youth. The breakdown of community, the lack of hope in a positive future fuels addictions and disassociative behaviour. Worth a read Nikki xx
