From its origins as a pioneering cotton mill to its current role as a vibrant community hub, the transformation of Brierfield Mill into The Leisure Box epitomizes the spirit of renewal in East Lancashire.

A Legacy of Industry

Established in 1838 by Henry Tunstill alongside the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, Brierfield Mill was among the area's first steam-powered cotton spinning mills. By 1879, under the stewardship of Tunstill's sons, the complex expanded significantly, housing over 2,200 looms and 91,000 spindles by 1890.

Evolution and Adaptation

In 1957, the mill entered a new chapter when Smith and Nephew Textiles Ltd acquired the site, repurposing it for the production of surgical bandages. The facility underwent modernization in the 1960s, marking a departure from its textile roots.

A New Era: The Leisure Box

Today, the historic mill has been revitalized as The Leisure Box, a state-of-the-art, 133,000-square-foot community leisure facility operated by Burnley FC in the Community. This transformation has preserved the site's architectural heritage while introducing modern amenities, including an indoor 4G pitch, a multi-challenge climbing wall, and dedicated play areas for children.

The journey from industrial powerhouse to community cornerstone reflects Brierfield's resilience and adaptability, honouring its rich history while embracing a dynamic future.

Big smiles at The Leisure Box this month!

Burnley FC stars Ashley Barnes and Connor Roberts dropped by to spend time with our young people taking part in Burnley FC in the Community's summer activity camps!

From fun games and challenges to quick selfies and a try on our brand-new padel court, the visit was packed with laughter and memories.

Our activity camps run every school holiday and half-term, giving young people the chance to get active, make friends, and have fun...just like the Clarets players did!
