A massive congratulations to CWO Hird from 1104 (Pendle) Squadron who has been nominated by North Region Air cadets for the Dacre Sword.

A message from the Squadron Commander Flt Lt Birchall:
"The staff and cadets from 1104 (Pendle) Squadron and incredibly proud of Cadet Warrant Officer Matilda "Tilly" Hird, following her nomination from North Region for the Dacre Sword award. In all my years within RAFAC, I haven't seen a more outstanding, dependable and hard-working cadet than CWO Hird and this is echoed by staff from across the Wing and Region who have worked with her. I wish her the best of luck for the final selection weekend and know that she has all of Cumbria & Lancashire Wing as well as 1104 (Pendle) Sqn behind her."

What a massive achievement and something to be incredibly proud of.

Flying opportunities!!!

Yesterday we had four cadets travel to 11 air experience flight at RAF Leeming to take to the skies✈️

For some it was there first time and learnt about the basics of aviation and had a fun introduction to flying.
For others who had been before, they further developed their knowledge and had fun with more aerobatics!!

They were also lucky enough to witness some eurofighter typhoons in action!!

A huge congratulations to our very own Flight Lieutenant Thomas Birchall, Officer Commanding of 1104 (Pendle) Squadron! 👏✈️

On 1st February, Tom attended RAF Leeming where he was proudly presented with his Regional Commandant’s Commendation in recognition of his outstanding leadership and dedication since taking command in February 2025. 🏅🇬🇧

Since taking over, Tom has transformed the squadron’s trajectory:

📈 Attendance has grown from 24 to 32 cadets — an incredible 34% increase!

🏆 At the Cumbria & Lancashire Wing Competition Day, the squadron brought home 5 trophies, including Overall Most Improved, climbing an impressive 17 places from the previous year!

🌟 He has expanded the unit’s footprint, creating a safer outdoor space for drill and sport.

🌍 Cadets are now accessing the full Progressive Training Syllabus, with opportunities ranging from local activities and camps right through to an international camp in Sweden.

An exceptional achievement and thoroughly deserved recognition for the impact he continues to make on the squadron and its cadets. Well done, Sir! 👏🎉

✈️ Inspiring insights from the RAF! 🤩

This evening, the Squadron held a Virtual Parade Night (VPN), where we were privileged to welcome Royal Air Force Engineering Officer, Flight Lieutenant Waddington.

Flt Lt Waddington spoke to the cadets about his RAF career, following on from his time as a cadet at 352 (Burnley) Sqn where he now volunteers as a Service Instructor. His story highlighted the many pathways and opportunities available within the RAF.

During his career, Flt Lt Waddington has enjoyed incredible experiences as an Aircraft Technician (Mechanical), before gaining a degree through the RAF and commissioning as an Engineering Officer. His involvement in the RAF 100 flypast and the Typhoon Display Team particularly captured everyone’s imagination!

On behalf of the Squadron, we would like to extend our sincere thanks to Flt Lt Waddington for giving up his evening to inspire our cadets and staff alike. 👏

Bronze Cyber & Blue Space Course 💻🚀

Today, cadets from across Cumbria and Lancashire Wing came together at 1104 (Pendle) Squadron to take part in a Bronze Cyber Course and Blue Space Course.

The Bronze Cyber Course looks at cyber security, online safety and what is in all the terms and conditions you consent to without even reading.

The Blue Space Course looks at our Solar System, The Big Bang Theory and different types of orbits within our atmosphere.

4 cadets were awarded their Bronze Cyber badges and 10 cadet earned their Blue Space badges. Congratulations to all cadets on the course!!

A massive congratulations to former 1104 cadet Air Recruit (AR) Culshaw on graduating his phase 1 training at Royal Air Force Halton. A former Cadet Flight Sergeant, AR Culshaw will now begin his phase 2 training after a short break. From all of us at 1104 (Pendle) Squadron, we are incredibly proud of your achievements and how far you have come since your first ever parade night!

While we are not a recruiting force for the Royal Air Force, did you know that around 1 in 3 personnel who join the Royal Air Force are former Air Cadets ✈️

1104 Christmas Bake Off! 🎂🎄

Tonight the Squadron held a Christmas Bake Off, where cadets brought in homemade cakes and dessert to compete to be crowned the 1104 Christmas Bake Off Champion. Cadets also brought in money to raise money for the Armed Forces Support Group 👏

Our Squadron staff were given the challenging task of judging the bakes based off their presentation, theme and, most importantly, taste (such a strenuous parade night for all the staff 😉🤣).

After a tough decision ranking all of the 13 bakes, the winner is...... 🥁🥁🥁

Flt Sgt O'Connor (number 3) for her excellent decorative skills and balance of flavours with the sponge and icing. 🥳🥳

Congratulations to all the cadets who took part in the Bake Off, it was an extremely close match between all of the dessert. See all of the entries below before the staff tasting and cadets then devouring the remains!

Over the Remembrance period, these fantastic young cadets volunteered their evenings to staff our Tesco Poppy Stall, supporting the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal with professionalism, pride, and dedication.

🌺 Thanks to their selfless efforts — and the generosity of the public — an impressive £501.49 was raised! 🙌🇬🇧

🇬🇧 Remembrance Sunday 2025 🇬🇧

On Sunday, cadets and staff from 1104 (Pendle) Squadron, were honoured to participate in the Remembrance Parades held in Colne and Nelson.

The Squadron joined members of the Armed Forces, veterans, civic leaders, and the local community in paying tribute to all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of our nation.

Our cadets conducted themselves with the highest standards of respect, discipline, and professionalism throughout both parades and services. Their exemplary bearing is a reflection of their commitment to upholding the values of the Royal Air Force Air Cadets.

We will remember them. 🌺
