As we age, the pads of cushioning under the balls and heels of our feet become displaced or thin out, caused by the loss of elasticity in the body’s tissues, and this can cause pain when we are walking – this is called Fat Pad Atrophy. It also affects people of all ages who engage in activities that involve a lot of jumping, people who walk or run a lot and people who are overweight because of the excess weight putting further pressure on feet. It is also a condition found in people with some medical conditions such as Type 2 Diabetes and Rheumatoid Arthritis. The loss of the fatty pad causes a bruise-like feeling in the heel of the foot that doesn’t go away and can even be felt at night in bed or whilst resting. Once the fatty pad has gone, it will not regenerate.

However, a trip to your HCPC registered Podiatrist can help with the use of Foot Mobilisation Therapy, taping of the heel and insoles which will help to make you more comfortable and be able to live with the condition.
