Well that’s the first time I’ve had to postpone a 121 session due to adverse weather! Thanks to my lovely clients for being so understanding – hopefully all will be calm come tomorrow. I don’t recall ever being buffeted so strongly by wind before. Storm Floris didn’t seem that bad first thing but when I went to leave the house just now it had really picked up and some of the stronger gusts literally blew me off my feet! A good chance to hunker down and watch the waves from afar. Stay Safe!

Great to see this article on the Wimbledon website sharing the positive impact breathwork has had on British tennis player Jack Draper.

It recounts how Draper ‘swears by this breathing business. You could say he wouldn’t be here without it.

‘In the past, he had been plagued by injury issues and anxiety. When the chips were down in matches, he got tense and that could be his undoing. Then at the start of this year, he began working with a breathing coach and the rest is, as they say, history.

“I started working with a lady called Ann Coxhead, who has a long career in breathing, expertise in different sports, different projects she’s done,” Draper explained. “She said she thought she could help me on the court.

“The work I’ve done with her has been invaluable. It’s been a real asset to my tennis. I think I’m still a work in progress with it, but definitely my physicality and my general wellbeing on the court has improved. I look forward to continuing the work with her. It’s definitely been a massive positive to my tennis.”

Wishing Draper every success for his game this afternoon! Let’s hope his breathwork practice has the desired impact and will continue to support his performance and recovery deep into the tournament.

With thanks to for drawing my attention to the piece https://www.wimbledon.com/en_GB/news/articles/2025-06-28/take_a_deep_breath_drapers_key_to_success.html

This client booked some 121 sessions to explore how breathwork might help her with pain.

We worked on three different approaches for this:

* Improving her day to day breathing habits
* Introducing daily coherent breathing to balance her nervous system
* Implementing specific techniques to reduce pain and anticipation of pain.

She brought a fantastic level of curiosity to the sessions and her home practice and as you can read, found the sessions very helpful. A couple of months after we’d finished working together she sent me a message from hospital, sharing how she was using her breathwork skills to help her through a very challenging time.

It was great to hear she was applying what she’d learnt so effectively. When we work together, I aim to make you self-sufficient, so you feel really confident knowing how and when to use different techniques to support yourself. If you’d like to find out how breathwork might help you, DM your questions or let’s set up a free discovery call.

Here on Coll it’s the first day of 2025 that daylight will exceed darkness. Sunset will occur 12 hours and 2 minutes after sunrise.

Around the time of the equinox, we often think about the ratio of day and night but have you ever considered the ratio of your breath? The length of your inhale and exhale impacts your physiology in a range of ways.

A balanced breath helps to balance the nervous system. One way of practicing this is to breathe slowly in and out through the nose, matching the length of your inhale to the length of your exhale. Find a gentle rhythm that’s comfortable for you. For example breathe in to the count of 3 and breathe out to the count of 3; or breathe in and out for 5. Practice quietly for a few rounds then notice how you feel.

In island news, March has seen some magical spring days. Skylarks are singing, veg seeds are sprouting and my morning breathing practice looking out over a beautiful bay is often distracted by the sight of shelduck and curlew! For balance, it hasn’t been all sparkly seas, glassy sunsets and still moonlit nights – there have been plenty of big swells, missed ferries and bitter winds but that’s Hebridean life! Wishing you peaceful balance, whatever the weather and wherever you are, this special time of year.

‘What a fascinating, thought provoking book! Very accessible, as you say. I really enjoyed reading it and have been so much more conscious in how I’m breathing. I had known before that breath could relax or bring energy into the body but never thought about what was actually happening in the body beyond that. And most of the experiments he described blew my mind!! Thanks so much again for that recommendation’

I recently recommended ‘Breath’ by to a friend asking how better breathing might help someone in her family. This message she sent echoes my own experience of the book. The results of the experiment Nestor undertakes to compare the impact on the body of mouth versus nasal breathing are particularly mind blowing!

Nestor blends scientific research with fascinating interviews from around the world as well as sharing the profound impact better breathing has had on his own life. He presents a strongly researched case for the practice of coherent breathing, a form of slow rhythmic breathing he concludes to be ‘the most efficient breathing rhythm’ citing the work of my teachers Dr Richard Brown and Dr Patricia Gerbarg.

Coherent breathing is the core practice I teach. If your interest is piqued do have a read. And for help lifting coherent breathing off the pages and into your life then please get in touch. Sessions are available in person and online.

My neighbour was spot on when she described Coll as an ‘amazingly beautiful and surprising place.’

So much about the last four months has been unexpected. I leave for the mainland at the end of chapter 1 with big hair and a full heart!

Enjoy breathing in a few wintry island scenes!

Feeling very grateful to be working with people in different ways this week.

I continue to offer 121 sessions online. We work on the ease and efficiency of your breathing and improving your day to day breathing habits. We also put together a toolkit of breathing practices you can use to support yourself going forward. This might be to calm your mind, navigate challenging times or support a specific area of health and wellbeing.

For those on Coll I am delighted to have started offering 121 sessions in person.

And finally a special thank you to the islanders who brought such a fun and friendly energy to the Vision Board & Breathwork Workshop and I held yesterday. We used the breath to help shake off tension, get the creative juices flowing and visualise our goals and dreams for 2025. It was a lovely session to run and we’ve been delighted to hear the different ways people are saying they’ve found it helpful.

Now to recharge by breathing in some sea air under a big old Hebridean sky!

As 2024 draws to a close I feel super grateful for the twists and turns that led me to explore spending time back on the Isle of Coll. The past few months have not been without their challenges, but they have truly nourished my soul.

I often write about using breathwork to create a sense of calm in body and mind. Today I’d like to invite you to use your breath to appreciate the good times.

Whether it’s a moment of stillness out in nature, dancing around the kitchen to a catchy tune, a feeling of closeness to someone you care about or enjoying the twinkliness of theChristmas lights, becoming conscious of your breathing can help you feel more present with the experience and really savour it. Just as we consciously breathe in the sea air, we can breathe in the good times.

This year I have foraged all my Christmas decorations from the shore, in golden sunshine, howling gales and everything in between! So grateful for the beauty of Coll and the creativity and connections it inspires. Wishing you fun festiveness over the next few weeks.
