🔘 So what is electroacupuncture? 🔌

Electroacupuncture is a form of acupuncture where a small electric current is passed between pairs of acupuncture needles.

🔘 How does it work?

It basically works by down regulating or desensitising overactive pain nerve pathways in both the peripheral and central nervous system. It affects nerve endings local to the problem, at a regional (spinal) level and at a general (brain) level.

🔘 What are the benefits?

Along with all of the healing benefits that you get with dry needling/medical acupuncture, such as increased blood flow and reduced tissue swelling. The addition of electrical stimulation to the needles can enhance the pain relieving effects of acupuncture alone.

🔘 What conditions can it help?

Several studies have reported that electroacupuncture may effectively treat neuropathic (nerve) pain and relieve sciatica symptoms. It can also help to reduce the intensity of pain for chronic low back pain sufferers. Electroacupuncture is also considered to be beneficial in improving peripheral neuropathy and relieving numbness of the hands and feet, as well as generally helping to reduce muscle spasms.

🔘 Does it hurt?

No, just like medical acupuncture/dry needling, electroacupuncture should never be painful. You might feel a slight, momentary, sharp sensation as each needle is inserted, then ones the current is turned on, you will likely feel a buzzing sensation which is often described as being pleasant.

🔘 Are there any risks?

As with standard acupuncture, electroacupuncture can cause a few side effects for certain people. These might include: feeling a little dizzy or faint. Patients who have a pacemaker fitted would not be considered suitable for this type of therapy.
