Today we recognised ‘National Read a Book Day’ here at Lancaster Grange on both our Sherwood and Memory Lane Communities.

National Read A Book Day is held on 6th September every year. It's a day to celebrate the simple pleasure of reading and to encourage others to share in this rewarding activity.

A story is a great way to bring residents together reminiscing and sharing life stories. Reducing stress, sharpening the memory, and improving sleep quality.

Residents enjoyed specially written short stories, made into booklets designed to be passed around, for everyone to read, with questions at the end to evoked memories and encourage discussions and conversations.

Activities Lead Cherilyn brought along her own Memory Quilt that she had made to show the residents.

Friday wouldn’t be Friday if we didn’t have our weekly game of ‘Traditional Prize Bingo’ here at Lancaster Grange.

Residents look forward to coming together on a Friday morning in our Sherwood Community Cafe, for a social game of Bingo.

But bingo can actually be a very healthy activity for aging adults. Studies have shown that there are many benefits of playing bingo for seniors in particular.

😊Increases Social Engagement
A bingo competition is a structured way for senior citizens to interact with other people. Since bingo games usually happen at the same time every week, it can easily become part of a routine.

🤔Allows Reflection and Memory Recall
Group bingo opens the door to socialise to connect with other seniors who have had similar life experiences. Additionally, using their memory to bring to mind past experiences is a great brain exercise for aging adults.

🥴Decreases the Risk of Mental Illness
One of the major factors of depression is isolation, which bingo helps to tackle through social interaction. Playing memory games, like bingo, is great for combating mental illness and memory loss diseases like

🤩Improves Cognitive Function
In this way, bingo strikes the perfect balance between improving the mind and being a simple, engaging game.

😉Improves Memory
People who are engaged are more likely to remember what happened than if they were bored or disengaged.

🤗Better Hand-Eye Coordination
Simple movements, like placing a chip on a card, can be beneficial to the daily life of older adults.

Not only do we play traditional bingo, but we also enjoy and have fun playing a wide variety of Picture Bingo’s on all communities.

We welcome any families and friends to join us.

At Lancaster Grange today, our residents were able to enjoy a variety of activities at their home.

The morning started with our three weekly visit from Kira our Pets As Therapy PAT Dog and owner Janet.

Kira and Janet spent the morning on our Memory Lane Community and happily visiting residents in their rooms on our community of Thoresby bringing lots of joy !!

Downstairs Cherilyn took the residents on a visual tour of the Island of Barra, a southerly isle of the Outer Hebridean islands Scotland.

Sharing with our residents the history, flora and fauna during a talk and slide show.

Our residents were thrilled to see the Basking Shark pictures and the pod of Dolphin videos, displaying also sensory beachcombing finds of cockle shells, a sample of the fine white sand and ordinances survey maps.

Brenda was reminiscing about her holiday experiences on the island and Nicole was fascinated by how white the sand was.

This afternoon we took time to pamper our residents with hand and nail care.

✨🎭 Bringing the Fringe to Strachan House ✨🎵

Residents, families and visitors at Strachan House Care Home in enjoyed an afternoon of fantastic performances as part of the Edinburgh Fringe Care Fest.

Now in its third year, the Fringe Care Fest brings the magic of the Fringe directly to care home residents who can no longer visit the festival venues.

Talented singer and pianist Jacqui Randa warmed up the crowd with her excellent keyboard skills and cheeky anecdotes. After a short break for more prosecco in the sun, everyone relaxed to the wonderful voice of Duane Forrest.

It was an amazing experience, complete with a special party menu from the home’s kitchen team, plenty of drinks – and of course, lots of dancing.

A big thank you to all involved in making this event such a success. 👏

⭐ Champions of Care: The Care Quality Leaders Network ⭐

We’re delighted to share that Sue Sheath, our Director of Regulation and Quality Improvement, has been featured in this month’s Caring Times magazine for her work founding the Care Quality Leaders Network.

In June, the network held its first face-to-face conference entitled ‘Innovating Care Quality: Leadership in Action’ in London, bringing together colleagues from across the adult social care sector.

What began as a small group of providers meeting informally before the pandemic has grown under Sue’s leadership into a thriving network of over 90 organisations – from large operators to mid-sized and smaller providers nationwide – all united by a shared commitment to champion high-quality care.

Sue commented: “I am so proud of how this group has grown over the last five years into an incredible supportive network with real influence. I was keen to create an opportunity for the group to meet face to face to hear from some of the biggest names in the sector about the challenges and opportunities we face and share ideas and best practice. I would like to thank all our generous partners such as Radar Healthcare, Care Launch and Nourish Care, who made this event possible.”

We’re so proud of Sue for her hard work in creating this fantastic network and for running such a successful event that brought together so many excellent minds! 👏

We were delighted to receive our Memory box from Boots UK and this was the perfect opportunity to take a look.

The Boots Memory Boxes are filled with items carefully selected by the team at the Boots Archive and include familiar smells and sounds to trigger memories.

It was filled with popular toiletries and soaps that reminded our residents of loved ones, cough medicine or bath salts that they once used helping them remember times they looked after themselves or others.

The box featured items with familiar sounds, like the click an old powder compact, and a camera, a beautiful lipstick that Ann couldn’t wait to try !!

Many items for the boxes have also been donated by Boots team members, partners and suppliers.

Boots launched this nationwide initiative to spark conversation and rekindle memories for those living with dementia.

A wonderful time evoking memories, stimulating mind, body and soul and a morning meeting old friends and making new.
