Traumatic experiences often involve a lack of choice. Invasion of your physical, psychological or emotional boundaries is a familiar experience for many people with an experience of trauma.
That's why even the most well-intentioned yoga and movement classes can be difficult. Praise and correction, encouragement to try things and physical assists come as standard in many classes and, don't get me wrong, they definitely have a place in many a wonderful yoga class. However, for people who are coping with the impact of trauma, these elements can feel like evaluation, coercion and a lack of safety.
This is where trauma-sensitive practice comes in. It needs to be different. I work hard to facilitate in a way that prioritises autonomy, supports self-inquiry, and trusts that healing emerges through choice, not control.
The SomaSoul Project is built on these principles. That's why you can make choices about what elements of the programme you attend, when you practice with the recordings and how much you engage in sessions - so that you can be part of something in a way that works for you and your nervous system. 🧡🌱
