Yesterday, I had a conversation with one of my trainees. She asked me, โ€œWhat if I don't know enough? What if I can't do this work because I must first become the product, the role model, the example to follow?โ€

No one wakes up one day and has all the answers. And the difference between someone who is smashing it and someone who is stuck in one place is the steps they take. Who will kick you in your ๐Ÿ‘ if not you?

What can you do if you don't know all the answers? We keep going, and you are honest about not having all the answers. You are humble and passionate. You can be authentic.

We all learn as we go; some of us hide it better ;)

๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿป So, how do you recognise if you can't do your job or have imposter syndrome? If quitting feels like a loss. If when you think you will be worse off not doing than doing. You take your fear and make a step, one step at a time, and as you are afraid, you keep going. Regardless. Slowly but consistently.

And if you need to pick me up, brainstorming or just proper personal development, โ€œtalkโ€. I'm here ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿป

๐Ÿ”บ Self-reflection in career development

You might be a manager, project coordinator or just looking for some tips on how to plan your career.

I have experience in project and people management. I worked with volunteers in 3rd sector organisations for the last 5 years and I can tell you that it is crucial, that manager and leader, support their teams to develop and grow.

๐Ÿชœ I like to work in this 3 step process (just like a ladder when you are getting to the purpose of your exploration). Ask yourself those questions:

โ˜€ Step 1: Self-Reflection
Who am I, at my core?
What are my origins and what drives my vitality?
What are my strengths and talents?
How do I envision living my life?

๐Ÿ“ˆ Step 2: Career Aspirations
What has my professional journey been like thus far?
What are my long-term career aspirations?
What is my ideal job or career path?
What values are crucial to me in my professional life?

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐ŸŽ“ Step 3: Personal Growth
What resources can aid me in reaching my objectives?
What steps do I need to take to enhance my proficiency in...?
Who in my network can provide support and guidance?

๐Ÿฅณ And now you can start drafting your career and development plan.

These steps are important for you too. You are responsible for your career pathway. There is no one there to kick you in the a... and tell you what to do. You need to be your biggest cheerleader. Sometimes you will fail, and take a step back, but you know how you want to live your life. And you can achieve this.

If you would like to work out a development plan for your team or organisation - just drop me a message.

Keeping volunteers engaged is crucial for the success of any volunteer-driven initiative or organization. Here are some strategies that can help you achieve that:

First, ensure clear communication by setting expectations and providing regular updates. It's important to match tasks with volunteers' skills and interests and emphasize how their contributions directly impact the organization's goals, providing a sense of purpose. Recognition and appreciation are crucial, so show gratitude through various forms of acknowledgement.

Offer opportunities for training and skill development, allowing volunteers to grow personally and professionally. Be flexible with schedules and create an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued. Seek and value volunteers' opinions and ideas, fostering a sense of ownership and contribution.

Foster a sense of community through social events and activities, promoting connections among volunteers. Clarify the organization's mission and help volunteers understand the impact of their work. Provide opportunities for leadership and increased responsibility, empowering volunteers to take ownership of projects.

Celebrate individual and team accomplishments, recognizing their hard work. Regularly check in with volunteers to assess satisfaction and address any concerns. Finally, demonstrate the tangible impact of their efforts by sharing success stories and showcasing the results of their work.

By implementing these strategies, you can effectively keep volunteers engaged and motivated in their roles.

Let's talk about volunteer management. It's not always flowers and unicorns.

Within your organisation, do you have pathways and policies developed to manage conflict resolution? What would you do if a less involved member of the team often criticised or pointed out negatives or risks? How do you deal with people who want to be involved in the project but often drop out as soon as there is work scheduled and assigned?

It is a common issue that all voluntary organisations face. In my experience, we don't talk about this dark side of volunteering in management courses enough. Often your essential services are dependent on volunteers. On the other side, you might have vulnerable adults or children that need support.

There are processes and pathways that you can develop to make your volunteering opportunities attractive, like maintaining clear communication, providing recognition and training, and ensuring flexibility and opportunities to grow. Some of them are easier and some are more difficult to develop. But all of them require management skills that you can learn.

And sometimes it's hard for both sides to let go and maybe look for alternative volunteering opportunities.

Book a call today to discuss how I can help you manage your team.

While leaders and managers both play important roles within an organization, there are distinct differences between the two:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Focus and Orientation: Managers tend to focus on the operational aspects of the organization, emphasizing efficiency, planning, and ex*****on. Leaders, on the other hand, have a broader focus on long-term vision, strategy, and inspiring and motivating others. They are more people-oriented and strive to guide and influence others towards a shared goal.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Approach to Change: Managers are often responsible for implementing and managing change within the organization. Leaders, however, embrace change and are catalysts for it. They inspire and drive innovation, encourage creativity, and are willing to take risks to bring about positive change.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Relationship with Employees: Managers typically have a formal authority over their subordinates, and their relationship with employees is based on their positional power. Leaders, on the other hand, build relationships based on trust, respect, and influence. They inspire and motivate their team members, empower them to reach their full potential, and encourage collaboration and open communication.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Scope of Influence: Managers' authority is derived from their formal position within the organizational hierarchy. Leaders, on the other hand, can emerge at any level of the organization, irrespective of their formal title. They have the ability to influence and inspire beyond their immediate sphere of authority, often leading by example and gaining followership based on their vision and personal qualities.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Time Horizon: Managers often operate within shorter time frames and focus on achieving immediate goals and targets. Leaders, however, have a longer time horizon and focus on setting a vision for the future. They develop strategies, anticipate trends, and shape the direction of the organization over the long term.

It's important to note that while there are distinct differences, leadership and management are not mutually exclusive. Many successful individuals exhibit both leadership and management skills, combining the ability to guide and inspire with effective operational oversight.

The role of a manager is distinct from that of a leader, although there is often overlap between the two. Here are some key aspects of a manager's role:

Planning and Goal Setting: They establish specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals and develop action plans to achieve them.

Organizing and Staffing: They allocate resources, create work schedules, and assign roles and responsibilities to team members based on their skills and capabilities. Managers are also involved in the recruitment, selection, and onboarding of new employees.

Decision Making: They analyze information, consider different options, and make informed choices that align with organizational goals and priorities. Managers are responsible for evaluating risks and benefits and balancing competing interests.

Directing and Supervising: They communicate expectations, provide instructions, and monitor progress. Managers are responsible for supervising employees, offering feedback and performance evaluations, and addressing any performance or behavioural issues.

Communication and Coordination: They disseminate information, foster collaboration, and ensure that everyone is well-informed.

Performance Management: They provide feedback, recognize achievements, and identify areas for improvement. Managers may also develop performance improvement plans and provide training and development opportunities to enhance employee skills.

Problem Solving: They analyze situations, gather relevant information, and implement appropriate solutions. Managers may also facilitate conflict resolution among team members.

Budgeting and Resource Management: They allocate resources, monitor expenditures, and ensure that financial targets are met. They may also negotiate contracts, procure necessary resources, and manage vendor relationships.

If your community organisation is struggling with project management, you can hire me to manage your team, project, task or budget on an ad hoc basis. I am a contractor that can bring a breath of fresh air to your organisation, help you transform and don't ruin your budget in the process ;)
