🦶 Let’s Talk: Lateral Ankle Sprains
A lateral ankle sprain is one of the most common injuries in sport — and yet, one of the most underestimated. If left untreated, it can predispose to recurrent ankle sprains and chronic ankle instability.
It usually happens when the foot rolls inward whilst planted, overstretching or tearing the ligaments on the outside of the ankle.
🔍 Common Symptoms:
• Sharp pain on the outside of the ankle
• Swelling or bruising that can travel down into the top of the foot
• Difficulty putting weight through the foot
• Feeling of “instability” or weakness
💪 Why Proper Rehab Matters:
Too often, people “walk it off” or just rest until the pain goes away. But without proper rehab, the ankle can remain unstable — increasing the risk of future sprains or even chronic ankle instability.
🧠 Rehab Focus:
✅ Regain full range of motion
✅ Strengthen the ankle and foot muscles
✅ Improve balance and proprioception
✅ Gradually return to sport-specific movements
If you’ve recently rolled your ankle, don’t just wait for it to “get better.” Early assessment and guided rehab make a big difference in recovery time and long-term stability.
