Chapter 5　Great Theory on Yin-Yang Corresponding to Nature ☯️

Huang Di said:
Yin and Yang serve as the law of the heavens and the earth,
The fundermental principle of all things,
The parents of change,
The beginning of birth and death,
The storehouse of the spirit.
The treatment of disease must focus on the primary cause, the disequilibrium of Yin and Yang.

Chapter 1

In a male, at the age of eight,
the qi of the kidneys is replete;
his hair grows and the initial teeth are substituted.
With two times eight,
the qi of the kidneys abounds;
the heaven gui arrives and
the essence qi flows away.
Yin and yang find harmony.
Hence, he can have children.
With three times eight,
the qi of the kidneys has reached its normal level.
The sinews and the bones are firm and strong.
Hence, the wisdom teeth emerge and
men grow to their full size.
With four times eight,
the sinews and the bones prosper in abundance.
The muscles and the flesh are full and strong.
With five times eight,
the qi of the kidneys weakens;
the hair falls off and the teeth wither.
With six times eight,
the yang qi weakens and is exhausted in the upper sections. The face dries out and
the hair on the head and on the temples shows streaks of white.
With seven times eight,
the qi in the liver weakens; the sinews can no longer move.
The heaven gui is exhausted.
The remaining essence is diminished
The kidney depot is weak and
the physical body is completely exhausted.
With eight times eight,
the teeth and the hair go.
The kidneys rule the water;
they receive the essence from the five depots and six palaces and they store it.
Hence, when there is abundance in the five depots, essence can flow away.
At this age now the five depots are all weak and the sinews and the bones have become sluggish.

Huang Di:
“When someone is old in years and no longer has children, is it that his strength is exhausted? Or is it that the heavenly numbers are such?”

Qi Bo:
“In a female, at the age of seven,
the qi of the kidneys abounds.
The first teeth are substituted and the hair grows long.
With two times seven,
the heaven gui arrives,
the controlling vessel is passable and the great thoroughfare vessel abounds with qi.
The monthly affair moves down in due time and,
hence, a woman may have children.
With three times seven,
the qi of the kidneys has reached its normal level.
Hence, the wisdom teeth emerge and
females grow to their full size.
With four times seven,
the sinews and bones are firm and
the hair has grown to its full extent.
The body and the limbs are in a state of abundance and strength.
With five times seven,
the yang brilliance vessel weakens;
the face begins to dry out;
the hair begins to fall off.
With six times seven,
the three yang vessels weaken in the upper sections.
The face is all parched,
the hair begins to turn white.
With seven times seven,
the controlling vessel is depleted and
the great thoroughfare vessel is weak and its contents are diminished.
The heaven gui is exhausted.
The way of the earth is impassable.
Hence, the physical appearance is spoilt and a woman can no longer have children.

Chapter 1 The Universal Truth

In former times there was Huang Di.
When he came to life, he had magic power like a spirit.
While he was weak, he could speak.
While he was young, he was quick of apprehension.
After he had grown up, he was sincere and skillfull.
After he had matured, he ascended to heaven.

Now, he asked the Heavenly Teacher:
“I have heard that the people of high antiquity,
all exceeded one hundred years.
But in their movements and activities there was no weakening.
As for the people of today,
after one half of a hundred years, the movements and activities of all of them weaken.
Is this because the times are different?
Or is it that the people have lost this ability?
Qi Bo responded:
“The people of high antiquity,
those who knew the Way, they modeled their behavior on yin and yang and they complied with the arts and the calculations.Their eating and drinking was moderate. Their rising and resting had regularity.
They did not tax themselves with meaningless work.
Hence, they were able to keep physical appearance and spirit together, and to exhaust the years allotted by heaven.
Their life span exceeded one hundred years before they departed.
The fact that people of today are different is because they take wine as an ordinary beverage,
and they adopt absurd behavior as regular behavior.
They are drunk when they enter the women’s chambers.
Through their lust they exhaust their essence,
through their wastefulness they dissipate their true qi.
They do not know how to maintain fullness and
they engage their spirit when it is not the right time.
They make every effort to please their hearts, but
they oppose the true happiness of life.
Rising and resting miss their terms.
Hence, it is only one half of a hundred years and they weaken.

The universal truth ☯️🧘‍♂️

The ancient sages taught their followers to avoid abnormal climate factors, admonishing them at the right time.
Be calm and peaceful, and true Qi will flow. The spirit will be preserved within, and illness will never come.
Thus, the mind will be at ease and desires will be few, the heart will be at peace and fearless, the body will be physically tired and Qi will flow freely. Each will follow his or her desires and achieve what he or she desires.
Therefore, they enjoy food, wear whatever they want, and enjoy their customs. The high and the low do not envy each other, and their people are therefore called simple.
Consequently, lust cannot tire their eyes, immorality cannot confuse their hearts, and the foolish, the wise, the virtuous, and the wicked are not afraid of things. Thus, they are in harmony with the Tao. Therefore, some people can live to be a hundred twenty years old and remain active without decline, because their virtue is complete and unfazed.

Linden flower season

As the weather gets hotter, the linden flowers are blooming. Tens of thousands of flowers on the tree release lovely sweet scents.

It has been used as folk medicine for hundreds of years, and has many health benefits.

Humble stinging nettle

While the sky gets brighter, the weather is warmer, the flowers are blooming, spring is here. When we enjoy the beauty of this season, some may have an unpleasant allergic reaction to pollens.

However mother nature has offered the solution quietly--the stinging nettles. The nettles start having new shoots at this time of year, providing the natural remedy for hay fever, if you dare to give it a go!

Stinging nettles have been used for food, herbal remedies for hundreds of years. It's a very nutritious plant, contains a variety of vitamins, minerals, fatty acid, amino acids, and polyphenols, which reduce inflammation, hay fever symptoms, blood pressure and blood sugar levels ect. Ancient Egyptians used it to treat arthritis and lower back pain.

Simply pick the top of the nettles ( with gloves or without it), even the stinging on your fingers has an effect for healing. Wash it with a bit of salt in the water, then you can make tea with it, or nettle soup.

Hay fever remedy: stinging nettles seeds tea

I have heard about nettle seeds were good for energy boost from other foragers. So I collected some last summer, put some in a small jar in the kitchen. But never feel like to drink it.

A couple weeks ago, I started having hay fever symptoms with blocked nose for the 1st time. Didn't sleep well and feeling tired. I saw the jar with nettle seeds in it, thought to give it a try. Wow! Not long after drinking a cup of tea, I felt so energetic! I am sure it's the stinging nettles seeds boosted me. And my nose felt better the next morning, double effects from one cup of tea. Now I looking forward to drink a cup of nettle seeds tea every morning. I certainly feel better in myself. 🍵💚

While the Hay Fever season starts, share my own experience to help someone to deal with the annoying allergic reaction.

Nettle seeds are great for skin, hair, your brain, supporting the kidneys, strengthening the adrenals (best if you have hypothyroidism, an underactive thyroid). They are full of vitamin-c and essential fatty acids. As Monica Wilde explains; the ‘feel-good factor’ of nettle seeds is caused by neurotransmitters acetylcholine and serotonin and is often prescribed as a tonic for people who need a boost in life.

Whilst we wouldn’t suggest it; flogging yourself with nettles - urtification - was a common remedial action taken by Roman soldiers who originally brought nettles to the UK in order to combat illnesses brought on by the damp climate.

How to identify a superfood? Well, you could do worse than asking; have we ever fed it to horses to improve their overall health? In the case of nettle seeds, yes - in order for sellers in the 1800s to get more for their stock they fed them seeds for two weeks before markets to improve their coat and vitality (source: Henriette's herbs). Then take Sea buckthorn (genus: Hippophae); another superfood of sorts - whose Latin name derives from from hippo (horse), and phaos (shining). If it’s good enough for an animal of that size, then it will likely have no trouble fixing us up.
