Bodywork focuses throughout the seasons
Spring - Horses are largely returning to full work/fitness after winter. Must monitor saddle fit as muscle rebuilds, monitor weight gain as the grass grows
Summer - Maintain suppleness during full work, prevent muscle fatigue. Assess foot balance as the ground hardens
Autumn - Assess for stiffness as the weather changes, Look at rugging as the temperatures change
Winter - Limited movement and turnout due to field and weather conditions, maintain circulation and movement

Myth Busting - My horse feels fine
Horses are prey animals; in the wild, displaying pain suggests weakness. horses are stoic animals and may compensate their discomfort through subtly changing their way of going or holding tension.

Myth Busting - Stretching is enough
Stretched can are beneficial for your horse, specifically when prescribed by your equine bodyworker to focus on areas of tension for your horse.

However, you must know how to stretch your horse correctly to prevent further injury.
- Always stretch your horse after exercise when the muscles are warm
- Hold the stretch for a maximum of 30 seconds
- Repeat 3 times a week

Targeting the Hamstring muscle group (Semitendinosus, Semimembranosus and Biceps Femoris)In this session, I’m working on the horse’s hamstrings. This area often carries tension from overuse or compensation for other muscles
Sports massage helps to:- Release muscle tightness- Improve range of motion- Support balance & posture- Prevent strain from building up
Just like athletes, horses need regular bodywork to stay supple, comfortable, and performing at their best.

Myth Busting - Massage is for older horses
Young horses in training will often carry tightness specifically as they grow, learn balance, and adapt to carrying a rider. Sports massage will assist young horses in developing the correct movement patterns.

Myth Busting - No gait asymmetry means that my horse is ok

Lameness or gait asymmetry does not necessarily mean that your horse is pain-free. Horses compensate for discomfort due to their nature as a prey animals. Horses may show small behavioural indicators such as reluctance to be tacked up, reluctance to work, changes in attitude or resistance under saddle. It is key that horses have regular bodywork sessions to ensure no discomfort occurs whilst also allowing your therapist to know what is normal for your horse and its body, allowing them to notice any subtle changes that could indicate an injury.

I have recently completed my MSc thesis titled “Do turnout rugs impact the stride length of the horse?” In this study, a cohort of ten horses of varying size, age, and breed were evaluated at both walk and trot on an arena surface, with and without the application of a turnout rug. Mean stride length in each gait and condition was calculated per horse, and data were subjected to statistical analysis.

The results indicated that the use of a 0 g turnout rug had no statistically significant effect on stride length in this sample population. In contrast, a recent preliminary study by Troup et al. (2025) reported that stride length decreased with increasing rug number and thickness in a group of 12 horses, with horses wearing layered rugs over a 28-day period demonstrating a significant reduction in stride length. These findings suggest that while lightweight rugs may not influence stride mechanics, rug weight and layering may have measurable biomechanical implications for equine movement and welfare.
