Over-rugging the horse
Every horse is an individual and extrinsic factors such as the horses age, breed, medical conditions, clipping status, field/ environment and weight to name just a few. However, the use of a rug guide can be beneficial in providing a guideline on how to rug your horse, depending on the weather, in turn reducing the risk of over-rugging and any detrimental effects on the horse. It is key that each horse should be considered as an individual whilst following this guide and adaptations made as seen fit by the carer of the horse.

Negative effects of poor rug fit
Incorrectly fitted rugs create constant pressure specifically over the horses withers and shoulders, if the rug is too tight or has slipped back over time. As the weather gets colder and horses are clipped, they often spend a longer time wearing a rug. Over time, the constant pressure created by the rug may lead to muscle bruising, decreased circulation and pressure sores. Tightness across the shoulder may cause a shortened stride.
Check your horse under their rug regularly, look for rub marks, changes in hair colour and uneven hair growth as signs of restriction.

Ensure that you measure your horse accurately using the rug fitting guide provided by the rug chosen manufacturer and adjust the rug appropriately to your horse.

Bodywork focuses throughout the seasons
Spring - Horses are largely returning to full work/fitness after winter. Must monitor saddle fit as muscle rebuilds, monitor weight gain as the grass grows
Summer - Maintain suppleness during full work, prevent muscle fatigue. Assess foot balance as the ground hardens
Autumn - Assess for stiffness as the weather changes, Look at rugging as the temperatures change
Winter - Limited movement and turnout due to field and weather conditions, maintain circulation and movement

Myth Busting - Stretching is enough
Stretched can are beneficial for your horse, specifically when prescribed by your equine bodyworker to focus on areas of tension for your horse.

However, you must know how to stretch your horse correctly to prevent further injury.
- Always stretch your horse after exercise when the muscles are warm
- Hold the stretch for a maximum of 30 seconds
- Repeat 3 times a week

Targeting the Hamstring muscle group (Semitendinosus, Semimembranosus and Biceps Femoris)In this session, I’m working on the horse’s hamstrings. This area often carries tension from overuse or compensation for other muscles
Sports massage helps to:ďż˝- Release muscle tightnessďż˝- Improve range of motionďż˝- Support balance & postureďż˝- Prevent strain from building up
Just like athletes, horses need regular bodywork to stay supple, comfortable, and performing at their best.
