1. Intrinsic Aging: The Clock We Can’t Control
Intrinsic aging is the natural process that occurs as we grow older. It’s determined by our genetics and happens regardless of external factors. Think of this as the aging written in our DNA.
•Skin: With time, skin loses collagen and elastin, making it thinner and less firm. Fine lines, wrinkles, and dryness appear as natural markers of this type of aging.
•Fat Pads: The fat pads beneath the skin, which once gave a youthful, plump appearance, begin to shrink and shift, leading to hollowing in areas like the cheeks or temples.
•Ligaments: These connective tissues that hold everything in place loosen with age, causing sagging in the face and other parts of the body.
•Skeleton: Bone density decreases, and facial bones, such as the jawline, may lose volume, subtly changing the shape of our face and posture.
2. Extrinsic Aging: The Impact of Our Lifestyle
Extrinsic aging, on the other hand, is caused by external factors such as sun exposure, pollution, smoking, and diet. While intrinsic aging is inevitable, extrinsic aging can often be minimized with healthy choices.
•Skin: Sun damage is one of the biggest culprits of extrinsic aging. UV rays break down collagen and elastin, leading to premature wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and loss of elasticity.
•Fat Pads & Ligaments: Lifestyle habits can accelerate changes in these areas, particularly if the skin is frequently exposed to environmental stressors.
•Skeleton: Poor nutrition and a lack of exercise can hasten bone loss, potentially leading to more pronounced changes in facial structure and overall posture.

While we can’t stop the clock, we can take steps to slow down the impact of extrinsic aging and support our overall health:

• Hydrate and nourish: Keep your skin healthy with a balanced diet and plenty of water.
•Stay active: Regular exercise helps maintain bone health and keeps your ligaments strong.
