'I am Capable and Competent!'

It's been a long journey moving towards being able to say this statement and mean it. My self esteem has always been low, my capability has always been more than I could acknowledge. Therefore, I have often chosen the easy option that has kept me small.

Now I plan to think bigger! To take up more space! To share my knowledge! To own my Competence!

I needed other's to believe in me in order to truly believe in myself. But other people's belief in me was not enough. I needed to start to believe them and own it for myself! Now I do!

So many of my clients come to therapy with really low self esteem. They have loads of capability but they doubt themselves and put themselves down at every turn. Living with doubt, disappointment and pain, feeling unfulfilled and often resentful.

In a world that often seems to take pleasure in knocking people down, lets take a stand and take action to build people up. How about offering a compliment instead of a criticism, a smile instead of a frown. You never know the positive impact these actions could have on another person.

Do you constantly doubt yourself?
Do other peoples' opinions of you affect your belief in yourself?
Do you live in fear of what other's might think?
Do you want to own your own personal power?
Do you believe you have personal power?
How do your internal beliefs block your amazing potential?

I've always seen myself as independent.
I don't see independence as a bad thing yet there is a balance.
I learned to be independent because relying on others didn't always feel safe.

Humans are not designed to operate in isolation. To be well we need a certain level in interdependence.
Yet I often found myself feeling I needed to do things total on my own and struggling to ask for help and this affected my mental health.

Over the years, through therapy, training and hard work I have found a balance, a healthy independence that allows me to ask for help, to lean into others and allow them to lean into me. By asking for and accepting help I have learned how to trust myself more fully and learned how to connect and trust others. Making my life more full and contented.

What is is like for you to ask for help?
Do you feel capable to doing things on your own or do you always ask for help?
What would it be like to consider trusting others to support you?
What would it be like to consider really trusting yourself?
How do you feel when you are in connection with others?

Do you want to learn how to find the beautiful balance between connection and independence?

Today, I met with three friends. We laughed and talked, and time slipped by so easily between us. I love how these three have taught me how to just allow myself to be in their presence. The intimacy we have together is something that 20+ years ago would have been terrifying because I learned not to trust folk, not to let anyone in.

This is a story I hear repeatedly in the therapy room: people wanting to connect with others but being too scared to reach out for it. Deep, meaningful connection is what we all crave; it's part of being human. Sadly, as we don't get this connection in various ways throughout life, it starts to feel unsafe and impossible.

What relationships do you allow yourself to enter into?
What relationships would you like to allow yourself to be in?
Do you let anyone in your life 'really' see who you are?
What do you imagine it would feel like to 'really' be seen by someone?
Are you willing to consider that it is possible to truly be met by another in your perfect imperfections?
What step might you take towards this today?

I have some vacancies in my practice in Carmarthen.

Choosing to enter into therapy takes courage and commitment, however it can be life transforming. I deeply respect my clients courage and provide a space for them to share, reflect, feel and understand their experiences. Helping clients make positive changes in life moving towards empowerment, change, healing, integration, growth and wholeness.

I work differently with every client because we are all unique and no one size fits all. I use our environments, culture, body, movement, art etc as ways to help my clients discover their own unique ways of expressing.

If you are interested in finding out more information about working with me please email me at sarah.langstaff@gmail.com
