Communication is important because that’s the way of expressing yourself. If we don’t communicate clearly with each other, there’s no point in communicating at all.

The way people communicate is made up of:

• Body language = 55%
• Tone of voice = 38%
• Words = 7%

Top tips for communication

1. Find a quiet place to communicate in without distractions.
2. Ask open questions that don’t have yes or no answer.
3. Clarify with the person that they understand what others are saying by repeating the question.
4. If the person wants you to go with them to show you something, go with them.
5. Watch the person’s body language and facial expressions.
6. Take your time, don’t rush your communication.
7. Use gestures and facial expressions. If you are asking if someone is happy, make your facial expression happy to reinforce what you are saying.
8. Be aware that some people find it easier to use real objects (Objects of reference) to communicate such as photos, pictures & symbols.

REMEMBER, ALL COMMUNICATION IS MEANINGFUL, BUT YOU MAY NEED TO WORK HARDER TO UNDERSTAND.

What does inclusion mean to you?

Those with learning disabilities, learning difficulties, and/or autism are more likely to experience exclusion and segregation, and we also often see attempts at inclusion become integration – for example, quiet hours in supermarkets. Full inclusion sees that everybody has the same opportunities and is included through provisions and equal measures.
