GRIEF AND LOSS AROUND THE FESTIVE SEASON

The festive season can bring intense feelings of grief and loss whether you have lost someone recently or if they died many years ago.

There are so many reminders at this time of year; gifts in the shops, music on the radio, films on the tv, cards coming in the post, friends and family sharing their photos on social media. All constant reminders of the loss you may be experiencing.

Traditionally it may have been a time that family came together to celebrate but now you are feeling worried about the having to face the first or another year without your loved one. You may be questioning if you want to join in with family and friends, if you can hold yourself together for the sake of others when you’re feeling emotionally overwhelmed, or whether you may prefer to break from tradition and do something different this year. Speaking to friends and family in advance will help them know how you are feeling and help them be sensitive to your needs and supportive during this time.

We all experience bereavement, grief, and loss in different ways. As counsellor I have heard many times people say I should be feeling or coping better by now. Your thoughts and feelings are validated, and you will grieve at your own pace. Tears, whether happy or sad just show that you that you cared and are a way of coping. Remember to be gentle with yourself during this time.

Ferndown Psychotherapeutic Counselling offers bereavement counselling for adults in the UK either in person or by phone. If you are looking for a counsellor for yourself or a loved one, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Some common conflict themes people describe in their relationships are communication, personal or partner habits, household chores, finances, parenting, decision making, quality time together, s*x, screen time, role experiences, time management, in-laws or the wider family.

Talking therapy (counselling) can help you explore these areas and how they affect your relationship, look at how you would like it to look differently and work towards changes. to have a happier and healthier relationship.

I'm a qualified integrative counsellor and registered member of the BACP

Have you ever thought about counselling but wondered how you could fit it into your life? Telephone counselling is an alternative to face to face counselling and may be an option for you.

I'm Stephanie Wadie (She/Her) an integrative psychotherapist based in Newcastle-under-Lyme. I offer phone counselling (talking therapy) to individuals who are looking for help with difficulties in their life. Therapy can help develop an understanding of what is bothering you or causing distress, even when there is not an obvious reason.

I offer short and long term work and have flexible evening and weekend appointments.

Talking helps....

Self-care is a way we can stay physically, mentally, and emotionally well. Life can be busy and stressful, and we often forget to prioritize our own needs which can lead to our energy levels being depleted and us running on empty. Self-care can be a way of finding a balance in your life. A few ways you may wish to consider are:-
• Saying ‘no’ occasionally
• Giving yourself permission to take a pause
• Asking for help
• Turning off the computer or phone, stopping work at a reasonable time
• Meeting friends for a coffee, spending time with friends and family
• Adopting relaxation techniques and getting enough sleep
• Exercise, adopting a routine you can stick to
• Choosing to eat more healthily
• Being present, focus and engage in the here and now
• Connecting to nature, spend time outdoors
• Take up a new hobby, something you do just for you

Why not spend a few minutes today to consider how much self-care you give yourself…

Journaling

Journaling is a complementary aid sometimes used in talking therapy. It is a reflective practice which increases internal self-awareness. By making entries daily, paying attention to events, thoughts, feelings and behaviours; triggers or patterns may become apparent.

The journal is personal to the client and it is down to them to what they wish to share in session.

Journaling can give the client clarity of internal and external conflicts and see areas that they may like to change.
